Autor: Ramon, Micaela

Resumo: [Excerpt] In a review in The New York Times of an exhibition of his work, Francis Augustus
Silva (1835 – 1886) was termed a “capable minor league” artist (Johnson 36).
Although his works are still respected by experts, his is not a household name with
the more artistically-minded public. His paintings, however, exhibit careful attention to detail and his treatment of light was such that it was viewed as a “means
of expressing feeling – or sentiment” (Baur 1018). This biographical essay does not
expect to push Silva into the fine arts’ major league; it aims instead to probe into
the circumstances and events surrounding his life and examine how they influenced the man and his art.[...]

Autor: Costa, Jaime
Resumo: Ernst Jünger, in the dystopian novels to which we dedicate this paper, On the Marble Cliffs (1939), Heliopolis (1949) and Eumeswil (1977), always comes to identify the same casualty arising from the action of government: the individual. From the rise of National Socialism up until the triumph of parliamentary democracy, Jünger combats the unrelenting asphyxiation of the individual by resorting to inner emigration. Nevertheless, this is only an option available to a minority: the members of a mature intellectual elite who stand above the parties and the masses, and who manage to position themselves above the general mediocrity of the times. In Jüngerian terms, these individuals are ultimately represented by the anarch, an individual who finds an alternative to the leveling world brought about by technology and its side effect of dehumanization.
The purpose of this paper is to explore Jünger’s use of fiction and show the path Jünger carefully designs to denounce the order of things, regardless of any possible political ideologies. Inner emigration is ultimately revealed as an ascension of metaphysical intensity focused on the preservation of the realm of individual freedom and the world of values.; Nos três romances distópicos a que dedicamos este ensaio: Sobre as falésias de mármore (1939), Heliopolis (1949) e Eumeswil (1977), Ernst Jünger identifica uma vítima comum na ação de governo: o indivíduo.

Resumo: This thematic issue is titled Wonder Comics. Redrawing Gender in Ibero-American Graphic Narratives. It aims precisely at this exercise of critical redirection by investigating the role of gender in the production, consumption and circulation of graphic narratives created in the Ibero-American context, a vast and heterogeneous container of cultural spaces linked by common historical, linguistic and political traits.
Este artigo tem como objetivos (1) enquadrar teoricamente as relações entre (P)LE, texto literário e competência (inter)cultural; e (2) demonstrar as potencialidades desse tipo de textos para o desenvolvimento de competências de mediação entre culturas, no contexto das sociedades atuais globalizadas.; Although resistance persists towards the inclusion of literary textual typologies in the study plans of foreign language courses, there are currently numerous theoretical works and reports of pedagogical-didactic experiences that prove the relevance of such an option. The progressive affirmation of the intercultural
approach opened up the possibility of viewing the literary text as a privileged instrument of access to a given language-culture, allowing not only direct contact with linguistic and cultural patterns of the target language, but also its comparison with the similar standards of the language(s)-culture(s) of origin of the learners.
When it comes to a pluricentric language like Portuguese, studied by students from geographically and culturally very distant and heterogeneous contexts, the use of these texts can prove to be a powerful ally both from the point of view of acquiring linguistic and communicative skills, as a means of accessing the cultural imaginary
of Portuguese-speaking communities. This article aims to (1) theoretically frame the relationships between (P)LE, literary text and (inter)cultural competence; and (2) demonstrate the potential of this type of texts for the development of mediation skills between cultures, in the context of current globalized societies.
