Autor: Marques, Ana Paula
Resumo: Family firms are considered the world’s most predominant form of business organisation. Notwithstanding the fact that there is a lack of consensus with regards to their definition, on recognise that family firms are different from non-family businesses due to their specific relations at three levels, namely ownership, business and family. It would appear that the family influences, shapes and conditions both the firm and its continuity, mainly through the intergenerational management succession, its planning and effectiveness. According to a recent research focused on the entrepreneurial succession in Portugal (AEP, 2011), 50% of family businesses are not passed on to the second generation, and only 20% reach the third generation. Also, taking into account the main results from the project “Roadmap for Portuguese Family Businesses” (NORTE2020/FEDER), the empirical findings have proved that the business succession planning has been identified as one of the most challenging steps in the life of the family firm, which demands for appropriate analysis. In fact, resistance to succession, relationship founder/ successor, planning of succession, type of organisational culture, among others, explain how executive succession is one of the most important and hardest tasks in organisational life. In this article, we aim to discuss the main management challenges of a family business, particularly the importance of succession preparation and the role of the family in the socialisation of the second (third or subsequent) generation. Based on an online survey (N 1148) and on in-depth interviews conducted to founder/ manager/ owner (N 23), we will seek to point out major challenges faced by the Portuguese family business, as far as this matter is concerned.

Resumo: This paper is based on a national study of entrepreneurship programmes and experiences related to non-formal and informal learning processes which have taken placed in higher education in order to promote entrepreneurial skills among (post) graduates. The notions of "Learning Society" and "Lifelong Education" are closely linked with the development of a new educational paradigm which aims to enhance learning opportunities and new applications of knowledge in "organizations of all types and in all spheres of life" (Gibb, 2005). Empirical findings are gathered from the research project called Link.EES (Learning, Innovation, Networks and Knowledge), focused on Entrepreneurship in Higher Education, and funded by the Operational Programme of technical Assistance (OPTA), by the European Social Fund (OPTA – ESF). The methodological design was divided into the following steps: application of an online survey on 57 academic stakeholders of the Portuguese public Higher Education Institutions (HEI); selection of 12 case studies of good practices in the institutions of higher education and subsequent analysis by conducting in‐depth interviews; and, finally, development of a repertoire of best practices in entrepreneurial skills and their validation by key actors and academic stakeholders. Three goals are pursued: i) a comprehensive meaning of “entrepreneurial learning”, taking into account the European concept of “entrepreneurial spirit”; ii) an increasing importance of programmes/experiences as well as infrastructures and services, related to entrepreneurial learning provided by the main academic stakeholders; iii) and finally, a crucial involvement of academic stakeholders in a collaborative effort to promote the entrepreneurship mindset in the academia. Our aim is to assess the collaborative work achieved through the direct participation of key stakeholders in entrepreneurial learning, by building a crucial repertoire of entrepreneurial skills linked to the formation, self-employment and labour market transition

The present research aims to overcome the restricted concept of entrepreneurship linked to the
practice of creating companies, to focus on entrepreneurial potential, considering the relevance of
higher education, in particular University education. For its framework, a theoretical methodological
(re)innovation of the concept of entrepreneurship is proposed, based on a social sciences
approach, especially from the contribution of sociology. The analytical dimensions are structured
around the following areas: (i) educational dynamics with a focus on teaching-learning
methodologies in entrepreneurship; ii) (re)configurations of graduates’ professional trajectories in
order to highlight the range of socio-professional statuses assumed; (iii) development of social
aspirations, namely the position occupied by entrepreneurship in the motivations, expectations,
values, identity references and representations regarding the professional future. The
methodological strategy includes an extensive cross-sectional diagnosis of social, organizational
and educational conditions in order to understand and explain the students' entrepreneurial
‘mindset’ and an intensive longitudinal study of its implications for the construction of projects and
professional paths.
It is expected that the overall results of this research will contribute critically to the sociological
debate, focusing on increasing the knowledge of the actors’ motivational structures, potentialities
and critical factors present in the educational processes and their implications in the labour market.
With an alternative proposal of the potential of entrepreneurship, one that has a multidimensional
and relational nature, the aim is to contribute to a sociological perspective concerned with reflection
and discussion about the consequences of entrepreneurial education and the requirements of
employability. These will tend to be accompanied by processes of worsening fragmentation,
uncertainty and precariousness of work and employment relations, and, at the limit, of social
relations, to constitute one of the dominant features of the current generation of graduates.
