Resumo: To understand the reality of the West Bank industry and several of its
main obstacles, it is impossible to neglect the influence of past political
events. In fact, the recent changes of the Palestinian geopolitical context
have been causing direct impacts on the Palestinian economy in general
and on the industrial sector in particular. One of the most relevant recent
political events that influenced the evolution of the Palestinian society and
economy is related to Oslo Accords signed in 1993, which has created the
conditions for the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. The main
objective of this article is precisely to evaluate how the new political
conditions achieved with the creation of the Palestinian Authority have
impacted the West Bank industrial development, in a sequence of three
distinct phases: the first phase is from 1994 to 2000 matched with the
beginning of the Palestinian Authority, and goes until the onset of the Al-
Aqsa Intifada. The second phase is from 2000 to 2004 matched with the
Al-Aqsa Intifada (or Second Intifada); and the third phase from 2004 until
the present time, started with the stability achieved after Al-Aqsa Intifada.
Methodologically, this study is based on a historical approach crossed with
a statistical and cartographic analysis of data from the Palestinian Central
Bureau of Statistics. The results demonstrate how erratic is the evolution of
the West Bank industrial sector during this period, and that almost 25 years
of the emergence of the Palestinian Authority, the weakness of the West
Bank industrial sector still persist, in part as a consequence of external
forces, namely all the impositions done by Israel to limit the sovereignty of
the Palestinian Authority to control its territory and economy.

do têxtil e vestuário. Neste âmbito, recentemente a ATP
euro-região no sector do têxtil e vestuário. Se o Norte de
Portugal tem uma capacidade e especialização produtiva
suportada num know how de várias décadas, por sua vez
a Galiza desenvolveu competências sobretudo no domínio
dos modelos de negócio da distribuição. Por outro
lado, as pequenas e médias empresas galegas da indústria
do têxtil/vestuário encontram-se demasiado dependentes
do mercado interno, enquanto o tecido empresarial do
do sector do têxtil e vestuário.; This study aims to evaluate the economic integration
process between Galicia and the North of Portugal on the
textile and clothing sector. In this scope, recently the ATP
(Associação Têxtil e Vestuário de Portugal), the CITEVE
(Centro Tecnológico das Indústrias Têxtil e do Vestuário
de Portugal) and the AIPCLOP (Asociación de Industrias
de Punto e Confeción de Lugo, Ourense e Pontevedra),
began the project EuroClusTex (Cross-border textile/
/clothing/fashion cluster of Galicia/North of Portugal), an
initiative which seek to enhance a deeper relationship
inter-enterprises between the two Iberian regions. It’s a
project that intends to reinforce cooperation between the
enterprises of the textile/clothing sector of this two border regions so that, together, they can deal, in a more efficient way, with the structural and cyclical challenges they
are currently facing.
In this context, this study seeks to identify inter-regional complementarities that, conveniently explored can
increase competitiveness of this euro-region in the cloth
and textile sector. If the North of Portugal has a capacity
and expertise based on the know-how from several decades, on the other hand, Galicia developed competences, mostly in the field of business models of distribution.
On the other hand, the small and medium enterprises
from Galicia of this industry depend too much on the
domestic market, while the companies from the North
of Portugal, once they are connected to a small domestic
market and with a low purchasing power, has revealed
an export tradition. To mingle these capacities may be a
way so that the enterprises from this Euroregion are able to assert their ability to compete in the demanding global
market of the textile and clothing

Two decades after Portuguese EU accession its time to evaluate the main structural changes that occurred during this period. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the Portuguese economy has evolved since the mid 80’s in order to understand how its corporate structure is readjusting to meet the challenges of economic globalization and increased competition that comes from trade and financial liberalization.
Taking advantage of the MTSS database, which displays information on employment and firms by municipality, our aim is to analyze how changed the structure of the active population and the relationship between the three main activity sectors (agriculture,
manufacturing and services) and the corresponding territorial dynamics associated with this adjustment process.
The most striking features of these first two decades of European integration were on the one hand, the process of deindustrialization, observed in the declining number of municipalities specialised in manufacturing activities, that has become confined to North and Central coast, and, secondly, the affirmation of the tertiary sector in the structure of employment. However this process of tertiarization is characterized by a
clear internal differentiation. The less qualified tertiary activities, particularly retail trade, were the ones that grew most in terms of enterprises, while business activities were the ones that have been creating more jobs during this period.
