Representações fantásticas na literatura portuguesa contemporânea: a ficção narrativa de Hélia Correia

Abstract

O presente trabalho aborda a expansão e a importância que o género fantástico conheceu na literatura portuguesa contemporânea. Deste modo, procedemos a uma breve incursão teórica pelo género fantástico desde o seu alvor até aos nossos dias, assim como ao confronto com um novo fantástico (neofantástico), de cujos principais matizes estão arredados o medo e o terror inerentes à narrativa fantástica oitocentista. Esta abordagem teórica reporta-se ao seminal estudo de Tzvetan Todorov, mas considera ainda o contributo de outros investigadores, no que toca sobretudo ao hibridismo e à evolução do conceito. Consideramos, assim, relevante determinar as fronteiras que separam fantástico de outros géneros, numa tentativa de, por um lado individualizar o género em análise e, por outro, nele localizar a ficção narrativa de Hélia Correia. De seguida, centramo-nos na análise da ficção narrativa de Hélia Correia, sem, contudo, deixar de contextualizar previamente a autora do ponto de vista histórico--cultural e literário. As obras seleccionadas, O Separar da Águas (1981), O Número dos Vivos (1982), Montedemo (1983), Villa Celeste (1985) e Soma (1987), circunscrevem-se, na totalidade, à década de oitenta e refractam a tendência deste período para uma profícua produção narrativa fantástica. A partir da análise das ficções mencionadas, no que se reporta aos motivos e processos retórico-linguísticos, verificamos que Hélia Correia realiza um percurso que vai do fantástico ao neofantástico, conciliando nos seus textos uma vertente mais tradicional com uma componente mais próxima da abordagem realizada, entre outros, por Jorge Luis Borges e Julio Cortázar. A demonstração de existência de uma combinação fantástico – neofantástico na ficção narrativa de Hélia Correia constitui a tese central desta dissertação.

The present work addresses the expansion and importance attained by the fantastic in the Portuguese contemporary literature. We thus undertake a brief theoretical incursion within the fantastic from is dawn until the present, as well as a comparative approach with a more recent fantastic (neofantastic), from whose main hues the fear and terror inherent to the 19th century fantastic narrative are removed. We follow mainly Todorov’s analysis of the fantastic, but we also take in consideration the contribution of other investigators as far as the concept’s hybridism and evolution is concerned. The study aims also to differentiate the fantastic from the marvelous and strange. We find it, therefore, relevant to establish the frontiers that set the fantastic apart from other genres, in an attempt, on one hand, to individualize it, and, on the other, to position Hélia Correia’s narrative fiction within it. Next, we focus on the analysis of Hélia Correia’s narrative fiction, but not without previously contextualizing the author in historical, cultural and literary terms. The selected works, O Separar das Águas (1981), O Número dos Vivos (1982), Montedemo (1983), Villa Celeste (1985) and Soma (1987), all show the decade’s trend for a rather proficuous production of fantastic narratives. From the analysis of the motives and the rethorical-linguistic processes of the formerly mentioned works, we realize Hélia Correia undertakes a course that goes from the fantastic to the neofantastic, conciliating a more traditional side with another one more similar to the approach of authors such as Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar. The fantastic-neofantastic combination in Hélia Correia constitutes the central achievement of our work.
