The broad nature of the issues concerning argumentation — ranging from the philosophical problematic of rationality and the relationship with the other, to the dynamics of sociability, power relationships, discourse analysis methods, cognitive processes, modes of reasoning, linguistic devices and the techniques of rhetorical communication — reveal the field of argumentation to be a multidimensional and complex domain. Whilst making this complexity transparent, this research focuses on two aspects: on the one hand, an approach to, and discussion of, the different theoretical models of argumentation and, on the other hand, an interrogation of the conceptual framework that can best respond to the requirements for applying a didactics of argumentation. The following may be cited as the main axes and objectives around which this study has been developed: • To outline and detail the context of the philosophical and cultural emergence of the contemporary renewal of argumentation studies. • To enquire into the current state of the art in this research area — which has revolved for more than half a century around the year 1958, the date which symbolically marks the emergence of renewed theorisation — and to understand the way in which theoretical trends have arisen and matured. • To critically analyse the different theoretical proposals, either by highlighting their most innovative contributions or questioning their limitations. • To elaborate certain concepts that are fundamental to a general understanding of the argumentation dynamic, taking descriptive appropriacy into account. • To propose a didactic orientation which combines interpretational and analytical skills with interaction with the discourse of the other, through the production of counter-discourse. This study upholds the idea that to theorise argumentation by taking into account descriptive appropriacy— or, in other words, a concern to establish a balance between what are considered argumentative phenomena and the theoretical tools used in their description and analysis — implies foregrounding the interactive dynamic between discourse and counter-discourse which characterises the argumentative situation. This focus on the tension between discourses leads to a consideration of argumentation on the basis of the different notions usually presented by theoreticians in this field, which are essentially directed towards argumentative mechanisms or cells (whether at the level of strength of reasoning, the power of orientation inherent in linguistic enunciation or the processes of discursive influence). This, in turn, leads to the proposal of the «subject in question» as a methodological unit that is better adjusted to an understanding of argument discourse and situations involving interaction in argumentation. Taking argumentation to be a critical discipline involving interpretation and interaction between the perspectives inherent in discursiveness, whose divergence is thematised by those presenting arguments around a given subject, this work (whilst not neglecting to refer to the social and symbolic value of argumentation and to the links between argumentative and sociological reasoning) proposes that argumentation practices are considered in terms of a confrontation of perspectives, and arguments are considered the exchange of values monitored by communicational interaction. Within this framework, in which certain notions, amongst others, are fundamental, such as the «subject in question», «thematisation», «perspective» and «counter-discourse», the didactic proposals put forward in the final chapter value, above all, an understanding of the argumentative situation as a discursive oppositional whole and the inseparability of the evaluation of arguments and their detailed production, associated with the prevailing perspectives. In addition, it posits, as essential to the teaching of argumentation, argumentative interpretation skills and the ability to interact critically with the discourse of the other by elaborating counter-discourse. In this respect, certain methodological paths for analysing argument discourse and producing counter-argument sequences are proposed.
