exclusivamente por imagens, intitulado “Frog, where are you?” (Mayer, 1979). Nesta tarefa
It is through the construction of narratives that children try to attribute sense and coherence to their world. This process, that allows to attribute meaning to the experience, occurs in interaction with others, namely with the parental figures. Maternal scaffolding, in particular, assumes an important role in the development of children’s narrative skills, which emerges around the age of 3. Based on this theoretical assumption, the main goal of this research is to understand the contribution of maternal verbal scaffolding in preschoolers’ narrative construction, at the level of narrative structural coherence. This study was elaborated based on an oral narrative elicitation task through a picture book named “Frog, where are you?” (Mayer, 1979). In this task, participated 41 children (24 boys, 58.5%) aged 4 years and their mothers. All narratives were transcribed, and subsequently analyzed and coded using a) the Narrative Structure and Coherence Evaluation Manual (Gonçalves, Henriques, & Cardoso, 2006) and b) the Coding System of adult´s verbal behaviors used to promote preschoolers´ narrative (instrument designed in the context of the current study). The results showed a negative correlation between the verbal behavior that direct children’s attention and interest to the book and the structural sequence and evaluative commitment sub dimensions, and a marginally significant result relative to orientation and integration; the use of specific questions and verbalizations that direct children’s discourse to certain issues of the story is also negatively correlated with structural sequence and marginality correlated to integration; no association was found between the use of examples and confirmation requests, as well as the use of open and close questions and discourse encouragements, with all different sub dimensions. Relatively to how the mother guides the narrative construction, it was found that a low level of intrusiveness, on the one hand, and a high level of sensibility and change, on the other hand, are associated with a high narrative structural coherence. The results of this study appoint to the importance of consider in verbal scaffolding study not only the type of verbal behaviors used by the mother, but also how they are introduced and guide the construction of the children’s narratives given the effects observed at the level of narrative structural coherence. |
