Environmental concerns and the levels of CO2 emissions required by organizations worldwide, combined with the need to increase the efficiency of vehicles caused a paradigm shift in the automotive industry’s. In this framework this dissertation aimed to design, simulate, build and characterize a prototype for generating electric energy reusing the thermal energy wasted in the exhaust of combustion engines using thermoelectric converters based on the Seebeck effect, which is generating a potential difference when there is a temperature difference at the junctions of different materials. However, the maximum temperature supported by commercially available converters is still low, 250°C and 320°C, compared to the exhaust gas that can be above 800°C. The integration of variable conductance heat-pipes, a highly efficient mechanism of heat transfer, between the zone where the thermal energy is available and the area that will receive it, allows to control the operating temperature of the thermoelectric generator, regulating the internal pressure, capable of utilize the full potential of the exhaust system of the vehicle. We proceeded to an initial study that allowed us to prove the reuse of thermal energy for electric power generation. Hence, the use of fins that are in direct contact with the hot gases, proved to be a good mechanism to promote heat transfer. The integration of thermoelectric converters with VCHP allowed controlling the operating temperature of the thermoelectric generator. The construction of thermoelectric generator, with more efficiently temperature control, has solved the barriers and the critical points identified during the practical work, and became evident the importance of the evaporation rate be identical to the rate of condensation, to keep the system balanced and able to function continuously.
