Neste sentido, e colocando a tónica
lidas e vendidas a nível nacional.
inalterados. Journalism, as a legitimized field of the public sphere, and place for the debate of several themes, takes on a paramount role in the (re)construction of symbolic gender representations. The discourses conveyed are the result of a selection of events, voices and frameworks. To incorporate a feminist perspective in the media analysis is, on the one hand, to question the hegemonic power structures which sediment asymmetrical representations that have social repercussions, and on the other hand, to emphasize the emancipating potential that can come from journalistic narratives. In the mesh of feminist media studies, a large part of the research has paid more attention to the everyday journalistic information. Thus, there is a gap in the field of studies that focus on pseudo-events as source for newsworthy material, and that question how they are set and framed in newspaper pages. In this sense, and placing the emphasis on a temporal and geographically localized knowledge, we started this research intending to analyse the evolution of the news cover in the International Women‘s Day in Portuguese press (1975- 2007). We focused on a period that expands over three decades, which were marked by profound transformations in society in general, in the women‘s and/or feminist movements and in the media in particular. The analysis corpus is comprised of the news articles published from the fist to the tenth of March about the ephemeris, in two daily generalist national newspapers with great circulation – Jornal de Notícias e Diário de Notícias. We chose two print media with different editorial positioning, which existed in 1975 and that stayed in the top of the most read and sold publications nationwide. We looked at informative and opinion articles, and within those we looked at the textual and visual messages, since news pieces are composed of multimodal languages that contribute to provide the massages with meanings. For our analysis we resorted to a methodological triangulation, crossing the content analysis of the articles; the critical discourse analysis of some texts and images; and interviews to journalists/columnists, newspapers directors and representatives of the civil society and government that operate in the women‘s rights/gender/feminisms area. In terms of general conclusions, the newspaper analysis reveals that over the three decades the journalistic coverage displays some intensity, although it is more oriented to the pseudo-events than to the problems associated with the International Women‘s Day, revealing a less substantial and more episodic treatment of issues. However, there seems to be an evolution in terms of the structuring of journalistic discourses about issues of (in)equality between men and women in society, although we can‘t speak of an ample debate and understanding of the complex issues that surround gender asymmetries. Although politicalinstitutional sources are often taken into account when writing news, the space and voice of civil society organizations is often restricted, even if these social actors are recognized as information sources in their field. Besides, we could see that since the first year of our analysis, there has been a casting to the news field of the pseudo-events organized by several civil society organizations within the scope of the ephemeris, in an attempt to place issues and standpoints in the public sphere though the media. In these newspapers the ephemeris goes from a demand for better living conditions and a more equal society – with scars from the cross fights of several post 25th April movements – to a symbolic convention that is marked annually. Regarding the (re)presentation of women within the ephemeris, there are coexisting representations that continue to crystallize the ‗old‘ dichotomies, at the same time that they reverse traditional gender roles, creating ambivalence, especially in more recent years, between dominant and resistance discourses. However, when women appear as protagonists, this change happens mostly according to patterns still associated with the ‗masculine‘ referent, excluding most women from the social and political representation spaces. If the journalistic language ‗puts on new clothes‘, transforming itself through an apparently more equalitarian and emancipating tone, in terms of substance, the discourses remain practically unchanged. |
