«Civic Education and Democratic Education in the Portuguese State School: opinions and options of the teachers». This text takes as its ideological and educational premise that public schools should, consciously and intentionally, contribute -as far as possible- to the civic and democratic development of the younger generation. All societies and political regimes with formally constituted educational systems use schools to do what in Durkheimian terms would be designated as «methodical socialisation of the younger generation». It is highly probable that this ideological work is more obvious in dictatorial regimes, of a totalitarian nature or in fact totalitarian. In a pluralistic democracy, respect for the various visions of the world and of society and for the various possible lifestyles may make it seem impossible, or at least very difficult, to carry out an educational study focused on values. However, the main conclusion of this research is that teachers make themselves available to participate in an educational endeavour that helps to shape young people in values and democratic and humanistic ideals.
