A herança cultural de um povo: segredos tradicionais no ventre

Abstract

Todo o mistério em que durante milénios a reprodução humana esteve mergulhada, levou à criação de mitos e à instituição de crenças na tentativa de explicar tudo aquilo que, até então, era inexplicável. Também a mulher, ao longo da sua vida, vai ouvindo relatos de experiências vividas por outros e de histórias que se transmitem sucessivamente de mãe para filha e que, não raras vezes, configuram crenças ou mitos determinantes dos seus comportamentos, geradores de receios e de medos a partir dos quais ela começa a construir a representação da sua própria gravidez. A presente comunicação tem por base um estudo levado a efeito no âmbito da dissertação de mestrado em Sociologia da Saúde promovido pelo Instituto das Ciências Sociais da Universidade do Minho, sob a orientação da Professora Dra.Paula Cristina Remoaldo. Este trabalho, intitulado Mitos e Crenças na Gravidez, teve como objectivos averiguar se as grávidas que frequentaram os serviços de saúde, foram, ou não, influenciadas por mitos ou por crenças e identificar comportamentos expressos por estas directamente dependentes de tais crenças. Em termos geográficos, estes estudo circunscreveu-se aos concelhos de Amares, Braga, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Terras de Bouro, Vieira do Minho e VilaVerde. Tomando em consideração alguns dos resultados obtidos a partir das entrevistas semi-estruturadas realizadas a 100 mulheres que deram à luz, pudemos concluir que 82% destas modificaram os seus comportamentos durante a gravidez em função do prescrito por determinados mitos e crenças, constituindo assim, elementos de segurança, de protecção, de conservação, de fé e de tradição que, no seu entender, é necessário manter.

All the mystery in which for millenniums the human reproduction was submerged, lead to the creation of myths and to the establishment of beliefs that tried to explain everything that until then was unexplainable. The woman, throughout her life, listens to reports of experiences lived by others and also listens to stories that are transmitted successively from mother to daughter and that, not very rarely, become beliefs or myths which will determine her behaviour and will also generate fears from which she begins building her owns representation of pregnancy. This work is based on a study made for the master ship in Sociology of Health promoted by the Institute of Social Sciences of University of Minho, under the orientation of PhD Paula Cristina Re-moaldo. This work untitled Myths and Beliefs in Pregnancy had the purpose of checking if pregnant woman that attend the health services were or not influenced by myths or beliefs and it also had the pur-pose of identifying behaviours expressed by those directly dependant on those beliefs. Geographically, this study circumscribed to the councils of Amares, Braga, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Terras de Bouro, Vieira do Minho and Vila Verde. Considering some of the obtained results of the semi-structured interviews made to 100 women that gave birth, from which we could conclude that 82% of them modified their behaviours during preg-nancy due to certain myths and beliefs, constituting elements of safety, of protection, of preservation, of faith and tradition which, in their understanding, it is necessary to keep.
