Occupational noise exposure is of great importance in industrialized countries, as industrial machines are typical relevant noisy sources causing discomfort and risk to the workers’ health. This work aims at studying in what extent individual hearing protection influences, or not, the perception of warning signals in industrial environments and in the presence of background noise. To simulate the industrial environment in the laboratory, an audiometric booth was used, in which were introduced two acoustic stimuli: the warning signal and the background noise. The warning signal used was one alarm signal from a textile machine and the background noise was white noise. The choice of the considered individual hearing protectors was justified due to their common use in industrial environments and it was decided to test a device of each type. Thus, it was chosen a model of an earplug and, among the earmuffs, it were selected a passive and an active models. Tests were performed with the subjects in the audiometric both using the different hearing protection devices. The warning signal and the background noise were emitted simultaneously through individual speakers. The evaluation of the alarm perception with background noise was made by a hand sign made by the subject. The obtained results showed that, under the used test conditions, earplugs and passive earplugs were the devices showing less interference with the perception of warning signals in the presence of background noise. At the same time it was found that the active earmuffs interfere with the perception of the warning signal in the same conditions. Accordingly, it should be questioned if their use in industrial environments is appropriate, in particular when there are warning systems like the one tested in this study.
