Em torno da Rua Verde : a evolução urbana de Braga na longa duração

Abstract

Este trabalho representa um contributo para a compreensão da evolução morfológica da cidade de Braga na longa duração, centrando -se num setor que corresponde à periferia ocidental da cidade medieval e moderna, a qual está representada pelo eixo viário conhecido, entre a Idade Média e o século XIX, como Rua Verde/Couto do Arvoredo e áreas limítrofes. A escolha desta área resulta do facto da referida rua corresponder na sua génese ao traçado da parte norte do cardo máximo da anterior cidade romana, bem como ao tramo inicial da via XIX, que viria a ser integrado no espaço intramuros, defnido pela muralha do Baixo-Império. Trata -se de uma via bem documentada arqueologicamente, quer na sua original confguração romana, quer na sua posterior feição medieval e moderna, constituindo o único eixo viário de origem romana que perdurou até ao século XIX, momento em que foi cortado pela implantação da parte sul da atual Rui Frei Caetano Brandão. Assim, este trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar as transformações urbanas ocorridas na área envolvente do referido eixo viário, tendo em vista verifcar as continuidades e descontinuidades do tecido urbano romano no posterior traçado medieval da parte ocidental do Bairro das Travessas, verifcar a evolução da urbanização da Rua Verde/Couto do Arvoredo, entre a época medieval e moderna, bem como a reorganização operada neste setor da cidade pela abertura de um novo eixo viário nos fnais do século XIX.

This paper represents a contribution towards the understanding of the long term morphological evolution of Braga focusing on a sector that matches the western outskirts of the medieval and modern towns, which is represented by the street known between the Middle Ages and the XIX century as Rua Verde/Couto Arvoredo and its bordering areas. Te selection of this area arises from the fact that the considered street matches its origin in the northern part of the former Roman cardus maximus including the initial stretch of Via XIX that was integrated into the intramural space set by the lower Empire wall. Tis is a well archaeologically documented street, either in its original Roman setting, either in its subsequent medieval and modern feature being the only road axis of Roman origin that lasted until the nineteenth century time it was cut of by the southern part of Rua Frei Caetano Brandão. Tis study aims to characterize the urban changes occurring in the area surrounding the referred road axis in order to verify both the continuities and changes in the urban fabric in the western part of the medieval “Bairro das Travessas”, to check the urbanization evolution of Rua Verde/ Couto do Arvoredo, between the medieval and modern times, as well as reorganizing operated in this section of town by the opening of a new street in the late nineteenth century.
