Utilização da folha de cálculo por alunos do 7º ano na construção de tabelas de frequências e gráficos estatísticos

Abstract

Este estudo teve como principal objetivo investigar a utilização da folha de cálculo por alunos do 7º ano na construção de tabelas de frequências e gráficos estatísticos, que se operacionalizou na formulação das três questões de investigação seguintes. (1) Que aspetos devem ser considerados na integração da folha de cálculo no ensino da construção de tabelas e gráficos estatísticos? (2) Quais as potencialidades e limitações do uso da folha de cálculo na aprendizagem da construção de tabelas e gráficos estatísticos? (3) Quais as perceções dos alunos sobre a utilização da folha de cálculo na construção de tabelas e gráficos estatísticos? Para dar resposta a estas questões realizou-se um estudo de natureza qualitativa, em que foi implementada uma intervenção de ensino sobre construção de tabelas de frequências e gráficos estatísticos, privilegiando o trabalho dos alunos em pares e com recurso à folha de cálculo. Na intervenção de ensino participaram 26 alunos de uma turma do 7º ano de escolaridade, de uma escola básica do distrito de Braga. A recolha de dados foi realizada através da observação direta das aulas, da gravação em vídeo das partes das aulas relativas à apresentação, discussão e síntese da resolução das tarefas, da análise das produções dos alunos, em papel e em formato digital, das avaliações das tarefas realizadas pelos alunos e de uma entrevista individual a todos os alunos da turma. Em termos de resultados, salienta-se a complementaridade da integração da folha de cálculo com o papel e lápis e o trabalho dos alunos em pares, que foram também valorizados pela grande maioria dos alunos. Os alunos responderam em maior número e de forma mais adequada quando utilizaram a folha de cálculo. A motivação proporcionada pela utilização da folha de cálculo, a relativa simplicidade do seu manuseamento, a facilidade com que os alunos ensaiaram soluções e a redução ou eliminação de erros revelaram-se importantes potencialidades da folha de cálculo na aprendizagem da construção de tabelas e gráficos estatísticos. Algumas limitações da folha de cálculo relacionaram-se com os erros na construção de tabelas e gráficos estatísticos que persistiram e as soluções prontas a usar disponibilizadas pela folha de cálculo que podem limitar a criatividade dos alunos.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the use of the spreadsheet by 7th grade students in the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs, which was operationalized by formulating the three following investigation questions: (1) Which aspects should be considered when integrating the spreadsheet in teaching the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs? (2) What are the potentialities and limitations of the use of the spreadsheet in the process of learning about the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs? (3) What are the students’ perceptions on the use of the spreadsheet in the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs? In order to answer these questions, a qualitative study was conducted, in which a teaching intervention on the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs was implemented, favoring students work in pairs and using the spreadsheet. A 7th grade class made up of 26 students from a middle school in the district of Braga participated in the teaching intervention. The gathering of data was achieved through direct observation of lessons, by video recording the parts of lessons containing the presentation, debate and synthesis of the resolution of tasks, by analyzing students’ productions, both in paper and digital format, through the evaluation of tasks carried out by the students and by means of an individual interview to all the students involved. As far as results are concerned, the complementarity of integrating the spreadsheet with paper and pencil and the students working in pairs is emphasized and it is also valued by the vast majority of students. Not only did more students answer while using the spreadsheet, but their answers were also more adequate. The motivation provided by the use of the spreadsheet, the relative simplicity of handling it, the easiness with which students experimented solutions and the reduction or elimination of errors proved important potentialities of the spreadsheet in learning about the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs. Some limitations of the spreadsheet are related to the errors in the construction of frequency tables and statistical graphs which persisted and the ready-to-use solutions made available by the spreadsheet which may limit the students’ creativity.
