The goal of this study is to understand expression and expressiveness in the portraits made from observation by XX century painters. When photography appeared in the XIX century, the status of pictorial representation was called into question, while at the same time being set free for individual expression and experimentation. This originated the diversity of interpretations of reality that we have been witnessing since then. The five painters that we have selected — Oscar Kokoschka, Alice Neel, Lucien Freud, Avigdor Arikha and David Hockney — reflect this diversity of goals and interests in their portrayal of the live model. This dissertation starts with an historical overview (Chapter 1.) signaling the painters that, within the tradition of portraiture, had a greater influence in Lucien Freud, Avigdor Arikha and David Hockney. In Chapter 2., we introduce the painters being studied by characterizing their graphic and expressive strategies. Next (Chapter 3.), we discuss the perceptual theories of representation of Ernst Gombrich and Richard Wolheim as well as the symbolic theory of Nelson Goodman. We argue in favor of an approach that combines certain features of Goodman’s theory with Richard Wolheim’s experience of ‘seeing-in’. In Chapter 4 we review the different esthetic theories of the attribution of expressive terms to works of art: the theories of expression of Leão Tolstoi, Benedetto Croce and R. G. Collingwood, the Gestalt psychology theories of Stephan Witasek and Rudolph Arnheim, the cognitive theories of Nelson Goodman, Guy Sircello, Douglas Morgan and Peter Kivy, and the arousal theories of Roger Scruton and Derek Matravers. Most expressive properties of portraits depend on similarity between the characteristics of representation and the characteristics of the natural expression of emotions or states of mind. Besides the relation between physiognomy and internal states, expression in portrait comes from the plastic qualities of drawing and painting. In Chapter 5, we examine these aspects in a systematic way. We discuss the issue of the relationship between artist and model so as to determine what characterizes the subjective attitude of each artist. Next, we study the connection between expression and physiognomy in detail — the face (eyes and mouth), the pose, and the hands — as well as expressive power of the different plastic elements in the drawings and paintings. Our conclusions are that the notion of expression as reference by metaphorical exemplification to feelings and other qualities (Nelson Goodman) is adequate albeit only partially. Part of what we perceive as expression lies in the dynamic appearance of the perceptual stimuli, as argued by Rudolph Arnheim.
