Resumo(s)A nossa contemporaneidade respira o ar do tempo mediático.
Our contemporaneity breathes the air of the era of the media. And the “society of generalized communication” in which we live, to use Vattimo’s words, has in the mass media as well as in the self-media its own designers who set the pace for the tone and the atmosphere lavished by them. This is, therefore, our condition, a mediatic condition – from the simplest of routines, such as watching TV, listening to the radio, navigating the Internet, glancing through a newspaper, touching a tablet computer, or even walking around a city - the media, particularly advertising, seem to accompany us at all times. The most relevant aspect of this situation is the fact that the communicational paradigm is entirely linked to information technology, which determines its possibility, functioning and circulation conditions. Departing from a point of view which defends that the information technology, which includes the media – and specifically advertising – projects a utopic ideal, it is my intent to question what I classify as “the advertising promise”. In order to reach my objective, I have focused my study on television advertising. Therefore, I selected twenty advertising spots covering a period of sixty years and different areas. I started by mapping several lines of thought that cross over the advertising phenomenon transversally, trying to build different variables, so as to establish meaningful relationships between utopia and reality, nature and simulation, techné and bios, “me” and the “other”, relationships that, in fact, intersect and confuse one another. It my purpose, by interrogating the advertising production on television, both in diachronic and synchronic terms, to show the decisive role that the media, by evolving as a phenomenon and as a cultural industry, have had in the formatting of the man of our days, determining his atmosphere and rhythm. In fact, the tentacular presence of technique, combined with aesthetics, have constituted themselves the only social promise, projecting the communicational mask of a new utopia: technological utopia.
