The following work aims to study the versatility of different exterior wood cladding solutions. By locating a pre-fabricated module in several places of the World we seek to expose the wood ‘’skin’’ to different constraints in order to study different ways of react in the process of project. Using the pretext of a project that is under development in UM, by a QREN protocol, the WoodenQuark, we decided to use this modular habitation as a study-case, and investigate about cladding applications that could articulate this pre-fabricated element with the surroundings. The goal is to use the skin of the building as an element capable of articulate the pre-fabrication with the characteristics of a given place. For that we started an investigation and tabulation of several kinds of external wood claddings with the objective of producing documentation that worked as a theoretical basis and consultation document along the project process. To apply the knowledge developed previously we set up tangible problems in specific locations. For that it was necessary to choose the locations in a consistent and incontestable manner and it was pertinent that these locations varied in terms of context. Therefore we marked as a start-up point a climatic analysis in order to decide which locations we would use to insert the pre-fabricated modules. With this objective we decided to use the climate classification system most widely used in geography, climatology and ecology: the Köppen-Geiger climatic classification. Using the five big climatic groups of this classification we defined, together with socioeconomic variables, the five locations in which we will put the prefabricated modules. Therefore we present five different solutions that were influenced by local traditions and technics, by cultural issues of a determined community e by the feasibility of each project in is context. We manage to use, in five different locations, the external skin as a mediator between the prefabrication and the characteristics of a given place.
