Resumo(s)Nos últimos vinte anos, o sector bancário português sofreu diversas alterações significativas, como a globalização, a crescente desregulamentação, a liberalização e o papel desempenhado pelas novas tecnologias (Dias, 2011).
Over the last twenty years, the Portuguese banking sector suffered several changes, in particular the globalization, the increased deregulation, the liberalization and the role played by new technologies (Dias, 2011). However, it was the international financial crisis, from the second semester of 2007, which shocked more the banking sector. This had its origins in the United States of America (USA) in the subprime market, but quickly spread to the rest of the world, which is characterized as the greatest economic contraction since the Second World War (Barth & Landsman, 2010). This thesis seeks to ascertain how the international financial crisis has affected the Portuguese banking sector. To accomplish this goal an interpretative case study is developed, based on the notion of legitimacy and considering the Legitimacy Theory and the Theory of Stakeholders, focused on a single case study, namely the case of the Portuguese Investment Bank (BPI), by analyzing the narratives in the letters of the Board of Directors, for the period 2005-2011. The study demonstrates that the international financial crisis constituted in fact a threat to the legitimacy of the BPI, the Bank adopted reporting strategies based on their good image and reputation, embodied by the premiums obtained. In particular, the Board of Directors’ Letters highlight the threat that the international financial crisis constituted to the legitimacy of the banking sector and, consequently, the BPI, but while trying to convey a message of confidence of the Bank, highlighting that the BPI was shown to have a large resistance and resilience capacity to face the global financial crisis.
