A domus da zona arqueológica das antigas cavalariças de Braga: contributo para o estudo da arquitetura doméstica de Bracara Augusta

Abstract

Este trabalho resultou de um estágio realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Arqueologia da Universidade do Minho, que teve como objetivo estudar um exemplar de arquitetura doméstica com base nos resultados das escavações da zona arqueológica das Antigas Cavalariças de Braga, executadas pela Unidade de Arqueologia no âmbito do Projeto de Salvamento de Bracara Augusta. O abundante acervo de informação resultante dos trabalhos de campo permitiu-nos realizar uma interpretação das ruínas da zona arqueológica, analisando o faseamento das estruturas, sempre que possível com base nos materiais associados. Como resultado deste estudo elaboramos diversas propostas de articulação planimétrica das estruturas encontradas. Nesta investigação analisamos as características físicas e orgânicas da domus, tendo por base as informações provenientes das escavações realizadas na referida zona arqueológica, com o intuito de obter a sequência de ocupação do local e assim identificar as diversas fases construtivas No decurso deste trabalho refletimos sobre as particularidades oferecidas pela domus, perspetivando a compreensão do processo edilício e dos modelos de domus de Bracara Augusta. Assim, para além de se analisar as fases construtivas da unidade habitacional, também tentamos avaliar as alterações decorrentes da sua continuada ao longo de séculos. Foi ainda possível identificar as características orgânicas dos espaços e a sugerir funcionalidades para cada um. Deste modo, consideramos que os objetivos deste estudo foram globalmente alcançados, conseguimos analisar uma unidade habitacional de Bracara Augusta, interpretando a sua orgânica e estabelecendo a sua tipologia. Em suma, esperamos ter contribuído para um melhor conhecimento sobre a arquitetura doméstica em Bracara Augusta.

This work is the main result of a curricular internship, performed under a master's degree in Archaeology of the University of Minho that aimed to study a model of a domus, based on the results of the excavations at the archaeological site of the ancient Cavalariças de Braga, performed within the framework of the Projeto Salvamento da Bracara Augusta. The great amount of data provided by the fieldwork enabled the interpretation of the ruins of the archeological area through the analysis of the successive occupation phases. Also, and whenever possible, several proposals of planimetric articulations between the discovered structures were made, considering the results of this study. Throughout this investigation the physical and the organic characteristics of the domus were adressed, through the analysis of the information from the excavations at the archaeological zone, in order to obtain the occupation sequence of the site and identify the different construction phases. In the course of this work a reflection on the peculiarities offered by the domus was made, foreseeing the comprehension of the constructive process and of the house models of Bracara Augusta. Therefore, besides the analysis of the construction phases of the housing unit also the changes arising from its use were approached. Moreover, it was possible to identify the organic characteristics of the spaces and assign them a function. In sum, the objectives of the study were successfully achieved. Through the analysis of a housing unit of Bracara Augusta, the proper evaluation of its organic and its classification. We hope that this work may contributes to a better understanding of domestic architecture in the Roman town of Bracara Augusta.
