A fotografia como estímulo do pensamento arquitectónico: as imagens referentes em Learning from Las Vegas

Abstract

Fotografia como estímulo do pensamento arquitectónico – Imagens referentes em Learning from Las Vegas é um estudo sobre a evolução da fotografia e o seu contributo como impulsionador de estudos teóricos no campo da arquitectura. Pretende-se com esta Dissertação de Mestrado compreender os antecedentes fotográficos de Learning from Las Vegas – da autoria Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, e Steven Izenour – um marco histórico na teoria da arquitectura; e, olhando para fotografia ao longo da História, conhecer os trabalhos de diversos fotógrafos que marcaram as suas diferentes épocas, mas sobretudo, apresentaram novas perspectivas sobre a cidade ou sobre a forma de olhar a cidade, da periferia ao centro urbano, do vernacular industrial ao vernacular comercial, da estrada de terra à Interestadual norteamericana. Este estudo procura também encontrar pontos de convergência entre Learning from Las Vegas e a obra de fotógrafos seus contemporâneos como Edward Ruscha ou os intervenientes na exposição de 1975, New Topografics, que na mesma época trabalhavam as mesmas temáticas, contribuindo para a criação de um olhar específico sobre este território disperso.

Photography as a stimulus of architectonic thought – Referent images in Learning from Las Vegas is a study about the evolution of photography and its contribution as a booster to theoretical studies in the field of architecture. It is intended with this Master's Dissertation understand the photographic antecedents of Learning From Las Vegas – from Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour – a landmark in architectural theory; and, looking at photography throughout history, knowing the work of several photographers who marked their different eras, but especially, presented new perspectives about the city or about the way we look at the city, from the periphery to the urban center, from the industrial vernacular to the commercial vernacular, from the dirt road to the US Interstate Highway. This study also seeks to find points of convergence between Learning from Las Vegas and the work of his contemporary photographers such as Edward Ruscha or the interveners in the 1975 exhibition, New Topografics, who, at that time, worked on the same subjects, helping to create a specific look about this dispersed territory.
