Abstract: This work was prepared in a Masters in Communication, Arts and Culture, University of Minho, and its purpose is to analyze the construction and development of the concept of popular theatre, together with its practices, since its first enunciations until the present day, considering aesthetics and sociological elements used in this process. To this aim, studies about this genre present in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Bertolt Brecht, Augusto Boal, Roland Barthes, Raymond Williams, Joel Schechter, among others were used, whereby it was possible to identify the use of two main interpretations of the term popular theatre. The first one, in this work called Affirmative-Descriptive Approach, considers the concept of popular as nonabsolute, but tangible, to which a work can get closer or further away, according to a range of attributes present in its production, performance and fruition. The second interpretation, in this work called Mercantile Approach, analyzes popular theatre from the point of view of its reception, framing it according to the parameters of mass culture and considering its work more ‘popular’ as its bigger potential as consumer goods. This perspective, which reached predominance from the Eighteenth Century on with the Napoleonic regulations for the theatrical arts, defines entertainment as its main goal. Popular theater was born, as a practice, in the Ancient Greece, in the Sixth Century BC. But, it was just in the Eighteenth Century AD this concept was articulated by the first time, inside the humanistic discussions of the Enlightenment. Lately, this genre is divided between interpretations that link it to the entertainment industry and perspectives that, in the other side, consider it as an important social contestation weapon. This work aims to bring up the discussion about the shaping of an art which has followed the historical evolution of the Western society, as its narrative constitution, tool for discussion and change in society, looking for an assertive conceptualization able to contribute to the survival of this art and for maintenance and ratification of its power as a tool of social transformation.
