The aim of the present work was to study the potential of anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid residues (OFMSW) and the influence of OFMSW size reduction (1cm to 8cm in size) in the production of biogas and organic degradation. As a case study, we considered the multi-municipal company BRAVAL, and the anaerobic treatment implemented in its unit of mechanical and biological treatment (MBT). The MSW used in the experimental test were from the city of Braga. Although not identically mimicking the conditions and the operation mode of the actual TMB anaerobic digestion treatment system, this experimental testing allowed distinguishing advantages and limitations that may emerge at the industrial scale. Two anaerobic digesters were operated in batch system (30% TS), one containing a mixture of OFMSW and the other a mixture of crushed OFMSW. The reactors operated for 83 days and the levels of soluble COD, VFA's, ammonia nitrogen and biogas production were monitored. At the end of the operation the content of methane in the biogas and solids removal were determined. Results showed that both digesters were affected by the inhibition by ammonia nitrogen, low methanogenic activity of the biomass, and the high solids loading. The high concentrations of soluble COD, VFA's and Ammonium obtained in the anaerobic digestion of crushed OFMSW, suggest that the first stages of digestion (hydrolysis and acidogenesis) occurred faster due to size reduction. The biogas production (( V Biogás / m VS)/ (L/kg)) was very low in both digesters (23 L / kg OFMSW digestion and 73 L / kg digestion of crushed OFMSW), suggesting that methanogenesise was not efficient. Laboratory tests conducted to determine the methanogenic potential of the wastes allowed to verify that the anaerobic process with high solids content is more problematical than the process with low solids content, and more affected by the instability of the process.
