Abstract

Vida sin principios es un ensayo que reúne las reflexiones y las críticas recurrentes de Thoreau, a él le dedicará una atención continuada durante toda su vida. El tema central del ensayo es la relación de la economía con la vida y, más concretamente, el precio que los seres humanos tienen que pagar para crear riqueza. Estando este étimo ya no relacionado con la creación de bienestar, con el disfrute de salud, sino con la obtención de medios y fines materiales. Thoreau denuncia la nueva consideración postindustrial del trabajo desde una perspectiva sintonizada con la filosofía Transcendentalista imperante. La búsqueda de las cosas auténticamente esenciales para la vida, y para el fin último de ésta, llevan a Thoreau a una reevaluación de la noción de trabajo frente a una república predominante, “democrática”, que trasforma inmediatamente a todo ciudadano en súbdito. Thoreau propugna el robustecimiento del individuo mediante el fortalecimiento de lo que denomina res-privata.

Life without principle is an essay that gathers Thoreau’s recurrent reflections and criticisms towards the society of his times. It is also the only essay to which Thoreau dedicated a continued attention during his lifetime. The central theme of the essay is the relationship between economy and life and, more specifically, the price human beings have to pay in order to create wealth. A concept no longer related to heath, the creation of well-being, but to the consecution of material means and ends. In this essay Thoreau exposes the new postindustrial status of work from the philosophical perspective granted by Transcendentalism. Thoreau’s quest for whatever is essential to the ultimate attainment of Life leads to a reappraisal of the notion of work in the face of an all pervading republic that makes a subject of the individual citizen. Thoreau proposes the enhancement of the individual through the strengthening of what he denominates as the res-privata.
