This study aims to investigate the processes associated to the transition to parenthood in father´s, in particular the emotional involvement with the baby, during pregnancy and at childbirth. The specific objectives are: (1) describe the emotional involvement with the baby in fathers from the first and third trimester of pregnancy to the postpartum; (2) assess changes in emotional involvement with the baby in fathers during the first and third trimester of pregnancy to the postpartum and (3) evaluate the effect of adult attachament on emotional involvement with the baby in fathers, in the first trimester of pregnancy. Participants for this study are 83 primiparous fathers. Data were collected through three instruments: A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale, in portuguese version, to assess the emotional father's involvement with the baby and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, in portuguese version, to assess the adult attachment, having regard to the avoidance of the relative proximity and anxiety abandoned. The results show that the emotional involvement between father and the baby is high in most parents either during pregnancy or after child birth. There are significant differences in emotional involvement among the three times, verifying an increase of moderate size in the emotional father's involvement with the baby. It observed a significant effect of adult attachment in the emotional involvement with the baby in the first trimester of pregnancy. Fathers with an anxious/avoidant attachment show higher levels of involvement not clear, as well as lower levels of emotional involvement with the baby. This study is a contribution to the literature, since it studies the development trajectory of emotional involvement in parent-men from the beginning of pregnancy and identifies the effect of adult attachment in the emotional involvement of parents with baby.
