The study of social representations on the Orthographic Agreement fits into the investigation on language policies and identity issues, into the context of Lusophony. The theoretical framework on this subject already includes a vast research on distinct aspects of language policy as in its historical context, with regards to these policies’ mapping in different countries, as well as about the discourses and identities in the Lusophony area. However, there are still few studies especially addressed to the Orthographic Agreement. During the course of this investigation, the Community of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP) had eight member countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor. According to the Diário da República nº. 193 (1991: 4382), the existence of two official Portuguese orthographies – the European and the Brazilian one – has been over the years considered prejudicial to an intercontinental unity of the language, as well as to its global prestige. Even being the sixth most spoken language in the globe and the fifth most used on the Internet (Internet World Stats, 2013), the attempt of formalizing it as a working language in several international organizations has had too few results. Thus, according to the Orthographic Agreement developers, the idea behind the treaty is to contribute more intensely to the boost of the Portuguese language all over the world, helping strengthening the ties among all the CPLP members and also promoting a cultural exchange within these countries. This thesis presents two empirical studies on the social representations of the Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement. The studies were developed with undergraduate students, using the methodology of focus groups and thematic analysis. One study was developed in Portugal, Universidade do Minho, and the other in Brazil, Universidade Federal do Piauí), enabling a comparative analysis.
