This study consists in the PhD dissertation in Educational Sciences, the field of Philosophy of Education, written by Adelina Andrês. This work is composed of two parts – part A,which includes five chapters, and part B, which includes four chapters; the index; the introduction; the conclusions; references and the appendix. Part A, the first chapter, gives an overall view of the story of education, it highlights several pedagogical practices used since the primitive societies until nowadays. The following four chapters focus on the education, over the time, according to Agostinho da Silva and emphasize the theory and the practice of the Escola Nova (the New School) movement, which this pedagogue paid special attention to. This section is based on written sources. Part B is developed from the oral record through conversation – based on the television program “Conversas Vadias” with Agostinho da Silva – which has been transcribed and it is completely dedicated to its hermeneutics and interpretation, in line with the pedagogic ideology showed in the previous part. The first four chapters refer to the life and the work of Agostinho da Silva; the discrepancy between the real condition of humanity – which corresponds to the specific features of the Criança (Child), such as the creativity – and the unfavorable condition in which the humankind lives in the world. It describes the search for the ways to solve that situation; and the education as a tool, which enables the rescue of the true condition of humankind by the possibility to re-emerge that Criança (Child). In the introduction the object of study is displayed, as well as the aims of the research, the methodology and the way as the essay is organized. In the conclusion, we highlight the main points to which the process of research has conducted us. The section of references is organized in three categories: Agostinho da Silva’s works; works about Agostinho da Silva; and others, which were used for the development of this thesis. The appendix is composed of the transcription carried out, fully, of the thirteen “Conversas Vadias”, after they were analyzed, and their sequenced exhibition follows the chronological order of television presentation.
