Nowadays, one of the main reasons behind the continuing deterioration of the environment in a global scale is the increasing growth of consumption, sternly connected with the generation of residues and waste deriving from the industrial production, leading, as a consequence, the degradation of the environment, not only in the places where they are dumped but also all the way through the diverse natural cycles of the biosphere. Considering this fact, one of the main challenges that the industry has to face at the present time, particularly the leather and shoe industry, is to find effective measures that provide and encourage the intelligent reuse of leather solid residues, therefore reducing the high costs associated to their treatment, which may minimize or even eliminate their impact on the environment. On the other hand, the problem of the leather solid residues has come to be seen as an opportunity by the socioeconomic field of the materials in what concerns to the sustainable management of the natural resources. Many of the discarded residues are high quality raw materials that can be reintroduced in the productive chain through their transformation into a new product, which can be directed to other market segments. Taking in consideration that the solutions proposal to solve the problem of solid residues is a crucial point towards the achievement to the sustainable development, this dissertation, in a first step and through bibliographic, exploratory and empirical research, aims to analyse and identify, under the point of view of the system of shoe production, the most appropriated moment, in the process of discharges of clean solid residues, to proceed to their reprocessing in potential raw materials. In a second phase, it intends to diffuse the concept of sustainable design, founded on the method of the modular design and principles of upcycling applied to the reuse of clean residues, in this case oh leather waste, converted into raw materials able to compose new modular patterns, which can be applied in objects of inner decoration, clothing and fashion accessories. Under this point of view, the method of modular design that is applied in this research comes to be the main focus of this dissertation, being it considered as a key system in the field of the design directed to a solution based on the eco-efficiency in the sense of amplification of the product life cycle, using processes and energy resources with lower environmental impact. It is a method that embraces the concept of “minimum stock and maximum diversity” in the system of assembling and dismantling the modules. In the drawing design, the modularity appropriates of small geometric modules of leather waste in order to convert them into multifunctional and customization components. It is employed the metaphysical language of the “Deleuze’s rhizomatic” philosophy and the art of geometry to compose the conceptual process of design, in the field of relations with emotional exchange, involving the designer’s capability of creative thinking connected with the interaction of the consumer to reinvent new ways of projecting with added environmental value. The result of this work aims to create opportunities towards a creative practice of design, which encourages not only the involvement of the consumer but also the association between the shoe industry, local or regional cooperatives, the society and the market through the promotion of a more eco-efficient production and through the conception of sustainable and customizable modular design, directed to the creation of multifunctional products with emotional connection and long-term consumer goods.
