Logificação da Psicologia o itinerário intelectual de Edmundo Curvelo sobre a Mente, a Lógica e a Filosofia

Abstract

O presente livro expõe , de um ponto de vista histórico - filosófico, o itinerário intelectual d e Edmundo Curvelo sobre a Mente , a Lógica e a Filosofia . Pretendeu - se, deste modo, contribuir para o conhecimento da História da Cultura Portuguesa , relativa à primeira metade do século X , através do estudo da obra curveliana; e contribuir , a partir da interpretação dessa obra, para o debate filosófico sobre a mente humana. O livro que agora apresentamos desenvolve , assim, a propósito da obra e do pe nsamento do autor nascido em Arronches, um duplo argumento: um argumento de ordem histórico - cultural e um argumento de ordem lógico - filosófica . No desenvolvimento do argumento histórico - cultural , reconhece - se que Curvelo é um autor cuja obra influi na Filosofia , na Lógica e Matemática , e na Psicologia . Todavia , também se reconhe - ce que é uma obra que recebeu influências do neopositivismo e dialogou com os desenvolvimentos da Lógica e da Psicologia , sobretudo com os elementos que estas disciplinas apresentaram de novi - dade a partir do sécu lo XIX. São notórias ainda as influências e o diálogo com autores nacionais , sobretudo Francisco Lopes Vieira de Almeida, Joaquim de Carvalho e Delfim Santos; com autores estrangeiros , sobretudo Ernst Mach, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap, Cyril Burt, e Jean Piaget; e com as tradições racionalista e empirista, idealista e fenomen ista, logicista e intuicionista, e pragmatista. Portanto, i gnorar o pensamento e a obra curvelia nos significa empobrecer a História da Filosofia, da Lógica e Matemática , e da Psicologia. O contrário é contri - buir de modo decisivo para o enriquecimento do património de que cada uma das histórias referidas. Deste modo, para cumprir o objetivo do aumento do conhecim ento da História da Cultura Portuguesa através do estudo da obra do autor alentejano , procura - se definir , na primeira parte deste livro, o estado da arte em relação aos estudos acerca da obra curvelia na, publicados até ao momento , concluindo - se que é inexi stente um trabalho detalhado que proceda ao inventário da obra ; assim, na segunda parte, procede - se a esse inventário e à hermenêutica da vida, da obra, e das ideias do autor arronchense, entre as quais destaca - se a ideia de logificação da Psicologia e as ideias que a suportam, nomeadamente o pensamento epistemológico idealista e os instrumentos lógico - matemáticos baseados na teoria de grupos ; e, por fim, na terceira parte, analis a - se as convergências e as divergências do pensamento curveliano em relação aos autores e às correntes científico - RESUMO xviii filosóficas com as quais Curvelo dialogou , permitindo situar o autor alentejano entre as tradiç ões neopositivista, fenomenista , pragmatista, do logicismo, intuicionismo e da lógica plurivalente do psicologismo fraco . Os resultados alcançadoserão: apresentação de uma vida comprometida com o enriquecimento da intelectualidade portuguesa; a exposição de uma obra original cuja relevância científico- filosófica bem mere ce a atenção dos leitores interesados no domínio da Lógica e da Psicologia, mas também nos domínios da Epistemologia, da Filosofia Ciência e Mente; o diálogo crítico com um pensamento informado e dialogante com as tradições da Lógica, da Psicologia, e Filosofia, desenvolvidas ao lon go das primeiras décadas do século X , mas simultaneamente um pensamentoriginal ; e, finalmente, o conhecimento da ideia de logificação Psicologia, na sua vertente teórico - filosófica e na sua vertente prático - científica. Estes resultados são os element os que, finalmente, permitem a explicitação do argumento lógico - filosófico, no que dele se extrai das três partes anteriores, que enquadra o pensamento curveliano no debatem Filosofia da Mente. D ebate, este, aqui, desenvolvido a partir da ideia de logificação da Psicologia, i.e., d a ideia de construção de uma estrutura lógica capaz de representar toda a vida mental. Portanto, ignorar esta ideia significa prescindir do contributo do autor português para o asunto mais vasto da lógico -matematização do cér ebro e da mente doseres humanos. Um programa científico que remonta a Alan Turing e permanece na ordem do dia. Em geral, ainda percebemos a lógico - matematização do cérebro e da mente humana como se de ficção científica se tratase. Todavia, é uma ideia viva que junta milhões deuros e dólares para investigação científica e que há muito alimenta espíritos científicos. Entre eles está, declaradamente, o d o filósofo português. Asim , para cumprir o objetivo do debate filosófico sobre a mente humana através da obra curveliana , n a quarta e última parte do presente livro , debate m - se oseguintes asuntos: a ideia de consciencialização do mundo e no que esta id eia traduz de monismo neutral, o problema conceptual na reflexão sobre a mente humana e a proposta curveliana que se configura num eliminativismo avantlalettre , o problema da identidade pesoal, o problema das outras mentes e do solipsismo, e, finalmente , a ideia lógico- estrutural da mente, conceptualizada como energia psíquica. O s resultado s alcançado serão : a exposição do contributoriginal de Edmundo Curvelo para o debate contemporâneo em Filosofia da Mente, particularmente através da investigação que ele desenvolveu em ordem à logifi cação da corente de cons ciência; a elucidação da teoria da mente do autor aronchense; análise das potencialidades e dificuldades filosóficas que se colocam a uma teoria da mente idealis ta; e análise das potencialidades e dificuldades que se colocam aos esforços ambiciosos dos programas científico - filosóficos que pretendem concretizar a logificação integral da vida mental.

This book presents the Edmundo Curvelo’s intellectual itinerary on Mind, Logic and Philosophy from a historical and philosophical point of view. The aim is to contribute not only to the History of Portuguese Culture of the first half of the Twentieth Century, but also to the philosophical debate on the human mind through the study of Curvelo’s philosophical work. Thus, from the collected works and the philosophical ideas of the author, born in Arronches, Portugal, this book develops a double argument: a historical and cultural argument, and a logical and philosophical argument. In the development of the cultural and historical argument, Edmundo Curvelo is an author whose work has influenced Philosophy, Logic, Mathematics, and Psychology. In addition, the argument demonstrates that Curvelo’s work was inspired by the logical positivism and influenced by the developments of logic and psychology, particularly by the novel elements that these disciplines have presented since the Nineteenth Century. Moreover, it is still remarkable to perceive the influences and dialogues with national authors, mainly Francisco Lopes Vieira de Almeida, Joaquim de Carvalho, and Delfim Santos; foreign authors, especially Ernst Mach, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap, Cyril Burt, and Jean Piaget; and with the following philosophical traditions: rationalism and empiricism, idealism and phenomenalism, logicism and intuitionism, and pragmatism. Therefore, ignoring Curvelo’s work would mean impoverishing the history of Philosophy, Logic, Mathematics, and Psychology. On the contrary, by highlighting Curvelo’s heritage we are contributing decisively to enrich the heritage of these histories. In addition, both the History of Psychology and the History of Science in general are not yet established in Portugal. Nevertheless, the originality of this author’s work offers each of these histories interesting details that should not be overlooked. Thus, in order to carry out the first goal of this book, it will be divided into three sections. The first section seeks to present the state of the art of Curvelo’s works, where we reach the conclusion that a complete inventory of the work and ideas of Edmundo Curvelo have never been done. Therefore, in the second section, we proceed to the inventory and hermeneutics of life, work and ideas of Arronches’s author, in which we emphasizes the idea of logicising Psychology and the ideas that support it, in particular the idealist epistemological thought, and the logical and mathematical tools based on group theory. Finally, in the third section, we analyze the convergences and divergences between Curvelo’s thought and the authors and scientific and philosophical traditions with which he has been in touch. The results achieved are: the presentation of a life committed to the enrichment of the Portuguese intelligentsia; the exhibition of original work, whose scientific and philosophical relevance clearly deserves the attention of readers interested not only in the field of Logic and Psychology, but also of Epistemology, Philosophy of Science and the Philosophy of Mind; the critical dialogue with an original yet informed thought based on the traditions of Logic, Psychology, and Philosophy (developed throughout the first decades of the Twentieth Century); and, finally, the idea of logicising Psychology in its theoretical and philosophical dimension, and its practical and scientific aspects. These results are the elements that finally allow the development of the logical and philosophical argument and set Curvelo’s thought in the field of Philosophy of Mind. The argument, here, is developed from the idea of logicising Psychology, i.e., the idea of building a logical structure capable of representing a full mental life. Therefore, to ignore this idea means to give away the contribution of the Portuguese author to the vast subject of artificial construction of the logical structure of the human brain and mind – a scientific program that was first formulated by Alan Turing and that remains on the international intellectual agenda. In general, we still see the artificial logical structure of the human brain and mind as if it were science fiction. However, it is a real scientific idea responsible for collecting millions of euros/dollars for scientific research and for feeding scientific spirits. The Portuguese philosopher is definitely among them. Thus, the last section of this book seeks to stress the philosophical debate on human mind through Curvelo’s works. Therefore, we analyze: the mentalist point of view of the world and the neutral monism, the conceptual problems that arise from the human mind debate and the Curvelo’s ideas, set as eliminativism avant la lettre, the problem of personal identity, the problem of other minds and solipsism, and, finally, the logical and structural idea of the mind, conceptualized as psychic energy. Among the results achieved are: the presentation of the original contribution of Edmundo Curvelo to the contemporary debate on Philosophy of Mind, particularly through research that he developed in order to construct the logical structure of the stream of consciousness; the elucidation of the theory of mind of the Arronches’s author; the analysis of the philosophical potential and difficulties faced by an idealistic theory of mind; and the analysis of the potential and difficulties faced by the ambitious efforts of the scientific and philosophical programs aimed to achieve the full logical structure of human mental life.
