Caminhos vicinais de Santo Antão: marcas de ocupação humana num território montanhoso

Abstract

O presente trabalho consiste em analisar o território a partir de centenas de caminhos vicinais que se estruturam ao longo da extensão da ilha de Santo Antão. Trata-se de um processo evolutivo que ao longo do tempo foi perdendo a sua essência e estas centenas resumiram-se a apenas vinte e cinco caminhos vicinais mais importantes. Os caminhos desenvolvem-se em toda a extensão territorial com um objetivo bastante específico, parte da teoria que de qualquer ponto da ilha se possa chegar a qualquer outro ponto da mesma. Partindo da observação do território ao longo da sua extensão, numa primeira fase, consiste em mapear a ilha segundo elementos topográficos de forma a descodificar a complexidade de espaços resultantes da formação de um território com características vulcânicas. Numa segunda fase faz-se uma leitura da apropriação dispersa do território e a forma como ela se articula mediante a sua estrutura de distribuição e organização. As duas fases de desenvolvimento do trabalho são de extrema relevância pois, para além de aprofundarem temas que permitem fazer o reconhecimento topográfico da ilha, ainda facultam informações que vão agregar e muitas vezes cruzar alguns aspetos em relação aos caminhos vicinais da ilha de Santo Antão. O último capítulo está mais direcionado ao campo de estudo que são as marcas de ocupação humana no território montanhoso, podendo observar estes como medidas de expansão territorial. Nesta fase a arquitetura do caminhar surge numa tentativa de transformar o território de forma a adequar-se as necessidades do transeunte e do habitante. O tema em si trata-se de um processo metodológico que parte de um pressuposto de interpretação da ilha em toda a sua extensão através da articulação dos caminhos vicinais com os aspetos topográficos.

The present work consist of the territorial reflection from hundreds of paths that are structured along the length of the Island of Santo Antão. This is an evolutionary process that over time lost its essence and these hundreds of paths were reduced to the twenty-five most important. These roads are developed throughout the whole territory with a very specific purpose, based on the theory that any part of the Island can be reached from one point to another. From the territorial observation throughout its lenght, the first stage consists of mapping the Island according to topographical elements in order to decode the spaces complexity resulting from the formation of a region with volcanics features. In the second stage we make a reading of the dispersed appropriation of the territory and the way it articulates in accordance with its distribution and organization structure. These two development stages are extremely importante because in addition to allow a further investigation of the subject in order to make the topographical acknowledgement of the Island, also provide information that will aggregate and often cross some aspects related to the paths of the Island of Santo Antão. The last chapter is more directed to the field of study that are the marks of human occupation in mountainous territory, that can be observed as territorial expansion measures. At this stage the architecture of the walk appears in an attempt to transform the territory in order to adapt the needs of the passerby and the inhabitants. The subject itself is about a methodological process based on an assumption of interpretation of the Island in its length through the articulation of the paths with the topographical aspects.
