Arte urbana: o caso do Porto

Abstract

A Arte Urbana é um tema ainda recente e controverso. Apesar de incompreendida por muitos, tem vindo a adquirir aceitação no mundo da arte. Esta investigação pretende compreender e inserir a Arte Urbana no mundo da arte, analisando diversas teorias da arte desenvolvidas ao longo do tempo. Após a investigação dessas teorias, é com a narração histórica – defendida por Carroll -, que a Arte Urbana se consegue integrar no mundo da arte. A narração histórica implica que o artista seja capaz de elaborar uma argumentação que justifique a relação da sua obra face a obras de arte precedentes. Nesta investigação apresenta-se uma visão global da Arte Urbana: as suas origens, os seus antecessores, a distinção do graffiti, as suas características essenciais, bem como os principais artistas e obras a nível mundial. Eclodiu nos anos 70 nos Estados Unidos da América e deve as suas origens ao graffiti. O graffiti foi crescendo e começou a ter obras elaboradas em paredes legais, evoluindo daí para a Arte Urbana. Este movimento chega a Portugal só nos anos 80, mas desde então tem vindo a desenvolver-se e a tornar-se mais activo na vida das cidades. Surgem eventos, actividades e incentivos para a prática da Arte Urbana, que através da reabilitação dos espaços públicos, ajudam a promover o turismo no país e a desenvolver o comércio local. A cidade escolhida para esta investigação foi a cidade do Porto. O Porto é rico em Arte Urbana e tem desenvolvido festivais, eventos e diversas actividades relacionadas com a temática. A Rua da Madeira será apresentada como um roteiro turístico alternativo e com um grande potencial de crescimento a nível cultural. Realizaram-se entrevistas a artistas urbanos do Porto para auxiliar na compreensão e na exploração de assuntos relacionados com a Arte Urbana no geral e, mais concretamente, com a Arte Urbana no Porto.

Street Art is a recent and controversial topic. Although misunderstood by many, it has now been accepted in the art world. This investigation aims to understand and integrate the Street Art in the art world, analyzing various art theories developed over time. After the investigation of these theories, is with an historical narration - advocated by Carroll – that the Street Art is able to integrate into the art world. The historical narrative implies that the artist has to be capable of developing an argumentation that justifies the relationship between his previous artworks with the new ones. This research presents an overview of Street Art: its origins, its predecessors, the graffiti distinction, their essential characteristics, as well as major artists and artworks worldwide. This type of art erupted in the 70s in the United States and owes its origins to the graffiti. The graffiti started to grow and to conquer legal walls for their artworks, evolving into Street Art. This movement arrives in Portugal in the 80s and it has been developing ever since, becoming more active in the cities life. Now there have been a lot of events, activities and incentives embracing this practice, which through the rehabilitation of public spaces, help promoting tourism in the country and developing local businesses. The chosen city for this research was Oporto city. Oporto is rich in Street Art and has developed a lot of festivals, events and various activities related to the theme. The Rua da Madeira will be presented as an alternative tourist route, with a great potential growth at cultural level. Interviews have been held to urban artists from Oporto in order to help comprehension and exploitation of issues regarding the Street Art in general and more specifically, the Street Art in Oporto.
