Grupos de apoio entre pais: perspetivas de mães de crianças com PEA do distrito de Braga

Abstract

Os pais de crianças com Perturbação do Espetro do Autismo (PEA) enfrentam níveis de stress e cansaço bastante elevados devido às situações que surgem no dia-a-dia, provenientes das exigências nos cuidados de saúde dos filhos, da falta de compreensão ou julgamento da sociedade e das situações inesperadas que a criança lhes proporciona. Seria, assim, oportuno compreender as perspetivas de mães de crianças com PEA sobre a importância, benefícios e dinâmicas de funcionamento dos Grupos de Apoio entre Pais. Posto isto, os objetivos do presente estudo passam por conhecer, compreender e explorar: 1) as perspetivas de mães de crianças com PEA acerca da importância dos Grupos de Apoio entre Pais; 2) a perspetiva de mães de crianças com PEA acerca das dinâmicas de funcionamento dos Grupos de Apoio entre Pais; e 3) a perspetiva de mães de crianças com PEA acerca dos possíveis benefícios que os Grupos de Apoio entre Pais lhes poderiam proporcionar. A metodologia em vigor define-se pela natureza qualitativa, onde foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas a 4 mães de crianças com PEA, de idades compreendidas entre os 2 e os 6 anos, residentes no distrito de Braga. Através dos dados recolhidos é possível concluir que as famílias vêem os Grupos de Apoio entre Pais como o possível apoio complementar que lhes traria uma nova motivação, melhores níveis de bem-estar, menores níveis de stress, maior capacidade de lidar com as diferentes situações do dia-a-dia, mais e melhor informação sobre os direitos da criança, e, também, menores níveis de tristeza, solidão, e insegurança. Quanto à criação deste tipo de grupos, apurou-se que as Instituições Locais seriam quem teria um papel essencial nesta ação, uma vez que conseguem chegar a mais pais e apresentar uma organização de agenda mais coerente.

Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face high levels of stress and tiredness due to the situation that arise in their routines. It happens because of the health care requirements of their children, the lack of understanding and the bad judgments by the society and also because of the unexpected situations that their child gives them. Therefore, it would be appropriated to understand what are the mothers’ perspectives about the importance, benefits and dynamics of Parent Support Groups. So, this study’s main objectives are to know, understand and explore: 1) the perspectives of mothers of children with ASD about the importance of Parent Support Groups; 2) the perspective of mothers of children with ASD about the dynamics of Parent Support Groups; and 3) the perspectives of mothers of children with ASD about the potential benefits of participation in Parent Support Groups. The present research comprises the qualitative interview method, by conducting semi-structured interviews to 4 mothers of children with ASD, with ages between 2 and 6 years old, who live in Braga. Using the collected data it is possible to conclude that families see the Parents Support groups as a possible additional support that would bring them a new motivation, better levels of well-being, lower levels of stress, greater skills to deal with the different day-by-day situations, more and better information about the rights of their child, and, also, lower levels of sadness, loneliness and insecurity. About the creation of this type of groups, it was found that the Local Institutions would have the most essential role in this action, once they are able to reach a bigger number of parents and submit a better and coherent schedule.
