negligenciado. Urge alertar a comunidade educativa para a importância do TPC, colocando o foco no
professor, primeiro e último responsável no ciclo do processo do TPC.
Pretendemos,
publicação em revistas incluídas no Journal of Citation Reports) .
influenciar a eficácia do TPC.
(Does homework design matter? The role of homework’s purpose in student mathematics achievement).
e preparar a aula seguinte.
purposes, homework behaviors and academic achievement. Examining the mediating role of students’
perceived homework quality).
Journal (Homework should be…but we do not live in an ideal world”: Teachers’ perspectives of a
homework of quality).
potencial instrutivo desta ferramenta. Similarly to other countries, in Portugal, Homework (HW) is an instructive tool that is frequently used by teachers. However, in teachers’ initial and continuous training, the maximization of HW as an instructive tool has been neglected. It is, therefore, a prime need that the educative community becomes aware of the importance of HW, highlighting the teacher’s role in the first and last steps from the HW process. Henceforth, the main focus of the present PhD thesis is on the teachers’ choices and methods of HW preparation. We aim to understand the impact of teachers’ variables associated with the first HW moment in students’ HW behavior and in their academic performance in mathematics. Additionally, our goal is to add to the HW literature. Through the identification of features of the HW preparation phase, we aim to contribute to the promotion of meaningful and adequate learning processes, and, consequently, to promote students engagement in their own learning. To accomplish these goals, four studies were conducted, two of which are already published and the others are currently under review in journals included in the Journal of Citation Reports . The first paper was published in 2014 in the journal Revista de Psicología y Educación (Teacher role: Focus on the characteristics of an HW of quality) and includes a review of the research pertaining the main HW variables that can influence the HW effectiveness (e.g., frequency, purpose). With this review we aimed to uncover the characteristics of quality HW. The second work was published in 2015 in the journal Contemporay Educational Psychology (Does homework design matter? The role of homework’s purpose in student mathematics achievement). This multilevel study showed that, after controlling for student’s characteristics and class variables, when HW was conceived as a way of transferring learning to other contexts, and required abstract thinking, it had a higher positive impact in students’ school achievement in mathematics than when HW was conceived as a way to practice contents and prepare for the next class. These results highlight teacher’s role in the first phase of HW (i.e., in the HW design with specific purposes). The third paper has been recently submitted to the journal Metacognition and Learning (Homework purposes, homework behaviors and academic achievement. Examining the mediating role of students’ perceived homework quality). This study has allowed to conclude that a homework quality perceived by students positively explain their homework behaviors, performance and mathematics achievement. Contrary to expectations, homework purposes did not explain the outcome variables. The examined model showed a good fit and explained almost 70% of students´ mathematics achievement. The results suggest that teachers should clearly relate the purposes of homework to their students so they can understand its utility and benefit from it. The last research work of the present thesis is a qualitative study which is currently under review in the Journal of Educational Psychology (“Homework should be…but we do not live in an ideal world”: Teachers’ perspectives of a homework of quality). This study has allowed to learn teacher’s perceptions about the characteristics of quality HW, and what characterizes the HW that teachers assign daily. Among other things, teachers value HW as an educative tool, and the main characteristic of quality HW and of hey prescribe daily is of reviewing and practicing what was lectured in-class. Additionally, we were able to identify some obstacles teachers face daily that complicate the assignment of a HW that they consider as a HW with high quality (e.g., tailored HW). The studies of the present thesis allowed us to conclude that: 1) HW is a tool widely used and valued by Portuguese teachers; 2) the teacher’s role in HW design is a key aspect to potentiate its effectiveness; 3) HW purposes are a highly important characteristic in the first phase of HW; 4) the HW purposes have a differential impact in school achievement; 5) although the importance of homework purposes, if students do not perceived its instrumentality for their learning, this characteristic will lose relevance; 6) teachers have difficulties in designing homework with all characteristics that they value; and 7) there is a need of training teachers regarding the characteristics of HW to maximize the instructive potential of this tool. |
