Elementos arquitetónicos de Bracara Augusta: Contributo para o estudo da construção romana

Abstract

Este trabalho teve como finalidade o estudo dos elementos arquitetónicos romanos de Braga enquanto contributo para a melhor compreensão da atividade construtiva em Bracara Augusta. Para o efeito foram analisados 254 elementos romanos depositados no Museu D. Diogo de Sousa e na Colina do Alto da Cividade. A análise destes elementos arquitetónicos, direcionada para as vertentes tipológicas, morfológica, morfométrica, decorativa, tecnológica e cronológica, permitiu-nos valorizar as matérias-primas utilizadas, o tipo de tratamento desenvolvido nas pedreiras e oficinas e o tipo de artistas envolvidos no processo bem como compreender o tipo de financiamento das obras e a organização da construção. Procuramos igualmente depreender a volumetria dos edifícios com que os referidos elementos podem ter estado integrados e, consequentemente inferir se estamos em presença de edifícios públicos ou privados. O estudo dos elementos arquitetónicos de Bracara Augusta, balizados cronologicamente entre os finais do século I a.C. e o século IV/V da nossa era, permitiram, assim, compreender melhor o universo dos processos construtivos no período romano e, simultaneamente, perceber o peso da construção como atividade económica na sociedade bracaraugustana.

This work had as goal the study of the roman architectonic elements in the city of Braga with the purpose of getting a better understanding of the construction activity in Bracara Augusta. To attain this goal 254 roman elements deposit at the D. Diogo Sousa Museum and the Colina Alto da Cividade were analysed. The analysis of these architectonic elements, directed to the typological, morphologic, morphometric, decorative, technological and chronological aspects, allowed us to value the materials used, the type of treatment developed in the quarries and workshops and the type of artists involved in the process as well as to understand the type of financing of the works and of the organization of the construction. We also tried to assume the volumetric of the buildings with which the mentioned elements could have been integrated and, consequently, infer if we were in the presence of public or private buildings. The study of the architectonic elements in Bracara Augusta, chronologically placed between the end of the 1st century and the 4th/5th century in our era, thus allowed us to better understand the universe of the construction processes in the Roman period and, simultaneously, understand the weight of the construction as an economic activity in the Bracara Augusta society.
