Urban society currently cohabits with noise, in all the segments of their everyday life. Noise pollution is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the main environmental problems in the world. Construction industry contributes significantly in countries’ economy and also contributing to the increase of noise in urban centers through equipment used during construction phases. Each new construction work that emerges adds noise to the environment, and from that observation some questions were asked: how to live with more than one source of noise, who are the people who live and work in the surroundings of a construction work, and what is the perception of discomfort about this environmental risk. In order to answer those questions, the objective of this thesis was to evaluate the perceived discomfort of the noise generated by the equipments used in construction sites during constructions phases, such as foundation, structure and finishing for buildings of the urban vertical type. To evaluate the perceived discomfort by people in the surroundings of construction sites, it was chosen the neighborhood of Boa Viagem in Recife – Pernambuco, Brazil, by its environmental and constructive characteristics. The sound pressure levels of the equipments were measured at about 30 centimeters of the equipment. A mesh of points was created from the equipment to measure several points next to the machine in order to trace acoustic curves. The first point was always at the equipment, the subsequent ones were separated from each other through a traced mesh that ranged from 5 to 10 meters (inside the construction site limits) creating points in a plan and feeding the SURF software, in the sequence it was possible to quantify the noise in the surroundings of the construction sites. Measurements were performed with the equipments responsible for the noise in functioning mode, because the intention was to verify the noise that effectively reached the neighborhood, in addition to the existing noise in the environment, and after that, the values measures were compared to the levels allowed by the NBR 10151. With those information it was possible to develop and apply a questionnaire, based on the criteria of the attitude scales, to the dwellers/workers of the properties surrounding the construction sites, where the objective was to verify the interface between the generated noise (from the construction sites) and the discomfort perceived. Using a quantitative characteristic, it was used a structured questionnaire with an explorative profile, aiming the determination of a mathematic model to portray the study. The sample was composed by 500 questionnaires, being 455 of them validated and 45 discarded. As a result, after tabulation of the sampled data and crossing variables, the logistical template was applied, through which it was surmised that the length of residence, the distance, the age and the family income associated with the stages of construction were taken into account as influential factors concerning discomfort. Then, a grid with 108 equations was generated, with which it was possible to set up a chart in order to determine the levels of such discomfort. Said chart had three lines, each representing discomfort relating to the stages of construction: if a marker is placed below the lines, than it is insignificant; if it is in between, it is tolerable; and if it is above the lines, it is deemed unbearable. The results obtained throughout the thesis shows that people are bothered by the noises, however they don’t clearly perceive these noises, being a mixture coming from the environment. It becomes clear that when there is a construction site, which means, a new construction of a building, all the discomfort generated by any kind of noise is attributed to the worksite, especially when there is a visual contact with the construction site itself. It is hoped that the results obtained will help in the development of noise maps in the city of Recife as a monitoring and evaluating supervision of urban noise, aiming future perspectives of the urban planning of the city.
