This dissertation has reading as its central topic. It is an activity of the utmost importance in the contemporary world, since it is indispensable for human cultivation and professional training and, ultimately, for making possible living together in society. Schools are a privileged location where, without any doubt, the act of reading should be encouraged. The teaching of literature must also promote reading through practices that encourage the formation of critical readers with the capability of relating different literary genres and types of language that further reflection on the readings and their associations with reality. The teaching of literature in Brazil, still focused on literary periodization, needs to be revised so as to allow the development of reading and the analysis of texts as central procedures in school curricula. This process may be implemented through literary literacy, individuals not only read literature for the sake of reading, pleasure is also involved and from it further reading may proceed. Individuals may, consequently, understand socio-cultural contexts and positively interact with them. In making literary literacy possible, the inclusion of facilities such as school libraries in pedagogical activities is fundamental because of their nature as sites of cultural dissemination through direct contact with books. So, this dissertation is aimed at analyzing the way literature teaching and its relationship with the reading practices of students is implemented for Basic Education (K-12) in the cities of Amargosa, Elísio Medrado and São Miguel das Matas, Bahia State. This study was carried out based on theoretical concepts about reading, literature, literature teaching and its context in Brazil, and also on the strategies and resources used for the implementation of literary literacy, motivation for reading, and the use of school libraries and textbooks in class. In order to begin to analyze and assess the complexities inherent to the educational context, a methodological qualitative approach was privileged. First, a biographical search was carried out, in order to obtain information and theoretical concepts that have been proved to provide support to the analysis of the collected data. Subsequently, a field study was carried out through the application of interviews and questionnaires to teachers, students and librarians so as to grasp their reality and know their ideas of on the topics studied. Results, once identified and analyzed, complemented the objectives set for the present research. From the data obtained, it was concluded that, although well evaluated by the students, literature classes do not encourage reading at a corresponding extent. The factors that contribute to this assessment are poor teaching conditions, lack of better infrastructure in schools, and teaching performed with an emphasis on literary periodization. It also found out that school libraries need better physical structures and collections and staff with specific training and greater inclusion in educational activities. To change the reality for literature teaching, it is necessary to implement a set of practices aimed at creating a culture of reading, where the act of reading is present in the activities of the school, inside and outside classrooms, involving students and the whole school community, valuing culture, diversity and creativity that come from a more constant and thorough contact with the world of reading, with the texts and books.
