A Casa de N. S. da Aurora, Ponte de Lima: análise histórico-formal

Abstract

A Casa de Nossa Senhora da Aurora, em Ponte de Lima, foi fundada no século XVIII pela mão dos Sá Coutinho Rebelo Sotto Maior. Apesar do edifício ter nessa altura ganho destaque e valor patrimonial, pelo facto de passar a estar associado a uma família de relevo no panorama social nacional, a sua história começou bastante antes. Entre o final do século XVI e meados do século XVII terá tido lugar a construção primitiva, que funcionaria como habitação secundária para as freiras do Convento de Val de Pereiras que, por ser distante de Ponte de Lima, não permitia que a viagem de ida e volta fosse feita no mesmo dia, obrigando-as por isso a pernoitar no Paço construído na Vila. Tais vivências e alterações não se encontram documentadas, nem sequer referidas, já que a Casa de Nossa Senhora da Aurora nunca havia sido alvo de estudo. Os processos de análise e interpretação realizados nesta dissertação visam colmatar essa lacuna, pondo a descoberto a história construtiva do objecto de estudo. O processo condutor do trabalho enquadrou cada uma das fases construtivas num período histórico-artístico, reconstituindo-as posteriormente, segundo a morfologia que as caracterizou em cada período. O constante cruzamento dos dados recolhidos culminou no traçar de uma linha cronológica que enquadra o edifício, desde a sua fundação, até ao presente. Do estudo dos momentos construtivos do conjunto, resultaram ainda as análises métricas, quer em planimetria, quer em secção, que constituem um elemento essencial para a discussão da autoria do projecto de ampliação do século XVIII. Numa parte final, a reinterpretação das teorias que têm atribuído a autoria do desenho da Casa de Nossa Senhora da Aurora ao arquitecto vianense Manuel Pinto de Vilalobos pretende contribuir para o valor patrimonial do objecto, assim como ser uma ferramenta de investigação que permita continuar o estudo sobre as obras deste e de outros arquitectos da época, cuja obra não se encontre bem documentada.

The house of Our Mother of Aurora, in Ponte de Lima, was created in the 18th century by the Sá Coutinho Rebelo Souto Maior. Even though the building has become more known and valued by that time, for the fact that it was connected to a well known family, its history had started long before. Somewhere between the ending of the 16th century and the middle of the 17th century, the first construction has taken place. It would have worked as a secondary house for the nuns from the nunnery of Val de Pereiras that, because of its distance to the village of Ponte de Lima, wouldn’t allow the nuns to go to the village and return in a single day. This experiences and changes are not documented, nor referred, since the house of Our Mother of Aurora has never been studied before. The analytic processes developed throughout the thesis aim to fulfil that gap, discovering the constructive history of the object. The working process has framed each of the constructive phases in an historical period, reconstituting them later as they were in each of its periods. The constant crossing of the gathered data has culminated in the drawing of a chronological line that frames the building from its foundation, up to the present. From the study of all the constructive moments of the building, resulted the metrics analysis, in plan, and in section, which represent a crucial element for the discussion behind the author of the 18th century project. Finally, the reinterpretation of the theories that have been attributing the authorship of the project of the house of Our Mother of Aurora to the architect Manuel Pinto de Vilalobos aims to contribute for the patrimonial value of the house, as for being an investigation tool that allows the continuation of the study about this and other architects from his time, whose work is not documented.
