Gostar ou avaliar: David Hume e a crítica de arte

Abstract

Este artigo pretende examinar o estatuto do crítico de arte no interior da teoria do gosto proposta por David Hume, reputada, precisamente, por ser uma teoria sentimentalista e que submete claramente a dimensão racional à ordem das paixões. Procuraremos escrutinar a relação que se poderá estabelecer entre o elemento cognitivo / intelectual e o elemento emotivo / sentimental da experiência estética. Será avaliado, em particular, o que significa afirmar de um determinado objecto que ele é belo, i.e., o que determina um juízo de gosto e o que ele nos autoriza a pensar.

This paper examines the role of the art critic within David Hume’s theory of taste. This is a theory renowned for its sentimentalism and for the way it submits the rational dimension to the order of the passions. We shall test the possible connection between the cognitive /intellectual and the emotive / sentimental elements of the aesthetic experience. We shall assess, in particular, what it means to say that a given object is beautiful, i.e., what determines a judgment of taste and what it let us to think.
