a Torre e a Praça.
transformação do espaço.
This dissertation intends to recognize the different occupation and marking processes behind the urban landscape, revealing its form essential symbolic value. As background, the city of Braga, in one of its most prosperous constructing epochs, the seventeenth century, provides the necessary context to this work. The ruling of the Archbishop D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles is highlighted, as sign of the particular govern structure of the city - the unified political and religious power -, establishing the religious buildings and its capacity to sacralize land as the case study. The research’s direction is defined by two distinct architectonic elements: the Tower and the Plaza. Their apparent contradiction leads the different researching methods and will determine the thesis’ structure by dividing it in two main chapters. The Plaza, Campo Novo, starts from a solid bibliographic set of references regarding its formation, in search of an alternative understanding of its conception’s conditions, motivations and influences. Through the examination of the historic and architectonic details, the theoretic and practical uses of Geometry seem to contribute to the plaza’s unique shape. The Tower, focuses on Braga’s rare cases of reared back churches’ bell towers, recognizing its form symbolic depth and content. These particular examples are covered and confronted, according to a magical-religious understanding of landscape, with the roots of the vertical architectural form and its adaptation to Christianity. The European context, the formal and functional opposition of the two studied artefacts, as well as the varied resources enable an opposite stance of concepts and purposes. Nonetheless, an unexpected link is established by recognizing a common origin to both their support’s elemental forms, providing an additional spiritual comprehension of space transformations. At last, it is intended to face the urban development of seventeenth century Braga, comprehending its historic features as the global representations of the architectural manifestations within it. |
