The main objective of this project was the exploration and development of efficient and innovative solutions for the permanent incorporation of different inclusion agents in rigid and/or flexible substrates, such as cork and textiles. For the textile substrates three different techniques were used – pad-dry and pad-batch by Foulard and exhaustion – for anchoring β-cyclodextrins. Moreover the functionalization conditions were diversified, namely the concentration of the solvent, the inclusion agent and the different crosslinking agents studied, as well as the selection of different textile substrates. The resistance of the functionalized substrates to the wash was also evaluated. Functionalized textile substrates were then analysed by a spectrophotometric method capable of evaluate the ability of cyclodextrins to form inclusion complexes with phenolphthalein. In parallel, cork – agglomerated and natural – was chosen as a substrate for the incorporation of different inclusion agents. Using the exhaustion technique, organic (β- CDs) and inorganic (halloysites and activated charcoal) inclusion agents dispersed in different solvents were incorporated. In all the cases the variation of absorvance over time was analysed, which allowed to infer about the capacity of the agents to encapsulate the composts of the cork who made alcoholic solutions became yellow. The spectrophotometer UV-Vis was used as a quantification technique and FTIRATR and TGA were used for characterization. The quantification method using the spectrophotometer UVVis was adequate, which allowed to confirm the incorporation of inclusion agents in different substrates. The characterization by FTIR-ATR allowed only to compare the differences on the profile of the studied materials, not allowing to conclude about the presence or not of inclusion agents in the functionalized substrates. The method of functionalization of textile substrates that showed greater resistance to washing was the exhaustion, although the amount of incorporated CDs wasn’t very high. Taking into account that it is extremely difficult to obtain CDs permanently linked to a textile substrate, the obtained results lead to conclude that it is a viable technique but needs to be optimized. In the case of cork, either activated charcoal, β-CDs and halloysites resulted in a yellowing of the alcoholic solution less pronounced than the control, more notorious when using activated charcoal, which led to the conclusion that all of them have capacity for complexation with cork components responsible for the yellowing. |
