Contributos para o estudo semiótico das representações geométricas da realidade: a semântica da matéria e a geometria como expressão

Abstract

O objetivo fundamental desta tese é o de confrontar diferentes sistemas e metodologias das ciências sociais com a presença, significado e intervenção dos diferentes modos de ser geométricos que esses mesmos sistemas e metodologias implicam, e como ambos atuam na realidade social como um todo. Defendendo uma posição epistémica de considerável relativismo, e cruzando a presença de factos sociais com processos cognitivos, comprovámos que o processo resultante do desenvolvimento das geometrias, desde as primeiras sistematizações do Renascimento até ao advento das geometrias não-euclidianas durante o século XIX, teve uma importância fundamental no desenvolvimento das ciências sociais, incluindo todas as disciplinas afeitas à realidade social no seu todo, especificando e problematizando o caso do design como prática social. Comprovámos também que, a topologia – disciplina e especialidade da área da matemática, oriunda da revolução cognitiva que aconteceu no século XIX com o aparecimento das já referidas geometrias não-euclidianas – foi de grande importância na produção teórica das ciências sociais, principalmente na seminal produção dos autores pós-estruturalistas. O corpo de análise desta tese está dividido em duas grandes partes: a semântica da matéria, e a geometria como expressão. A primeira parte é constituída por três diferentes processos de análise do elemento de maior plasticidade semântica no sentido mais abrangente possível do que se possa entender por signomatéria. São então feitas três análises a esse elemento semântico por nós previamente definido: uma análise diacrónica, uma análise sincrónica, e uma análise em profundidade. A segunda parte empreende o exercício de analisar as tentativas de isenção dos diferentes sistemas geométricos, propondo considera-los pela sua expressividade como modos de ser, retirando as consequências desta mesmas considerações para um renovado significado das ciências sociais no seu todo.

The fundamental objective of this thesis is to compare different systems and methodologies of the social sciences with the presence, meaning and involvement of different geometrical ways of being that these systems and methods involve, and how both work in social reality as a whole. Supporting an epistemic position of considerable relativism, and crossing the presence of social facts with cognitive processes, we proved that the resulting process of the development of the different geometries, from the first systematization of the Renaissance until the advent of non-Euclidean geometries in the nineteenth century, had a fundamental importance in the development of the social sciences, including all disciplines concerning to the social reality as a whole, specifying and questioning the case of design as a social practice. We also proved that topology – a discipline and a specific area of mathematics, arising from the cognitive revolution that tack place in the nineteenth century with the emergence of the aforementioned non-Euclidean geometries – became a subject of great importance in theoretical work of social sciences, especially in the seminal production of poststructuralist authors. The whole of the present thesis analysis is divided into two parts: the semantics of matter and geometry as an expression. The first part consists of three different processes of analysis of the semantic element of maximum plasticity in the broadest possible sense of what can be understood as sign-matter. Three kind of analysis are then approached on this semantic element previously defined: a diachronic analysis, a synchronic analysis, and a indepth analysis. The second part or our work undertakes the exercise of analyzing the attempts of impartiality of the different geometric systems, proposing them for their expressiveness as ways of being, taking the consequences of this considerations for a renewed significance of the social sciences as a whole.
