Metodologia: Revisão sistemática em estudos publicados nas bases PubMed, EBSCO, LILACS, Web of Science, BVS e B-On.
Active behaviors in children and adolescents continue to decline. Active commuting (walking / cycling) is characterized as one of the possibilities to increase the levels of physical activity in their school life routine. However, studies have shown that several factors (intrapersonal, political, environmental, etc.) can influence the decision on the mode of displacement. This study aimed to analyze the methods and instruments of environmental evaluation (objective and perceived) in studies that investigated the relationship between the environment and the modes of active displacement of primary school children (2nd / 3rd cycle) in the home-school path. This study aimed to analyze the methods and instruments of environmental evaluation (objective and perceived) in studies that investigated the relationship between the environment and the modes of active displacement of primary school children (2nd / 3rd cycle) in the home-school path. In this sense, a systematic review of published studies in the PubMed, EBSCO, LILACS, Web of Science, VHL and B-On databases was made. Selected descriptors: active commuting, children, school, environmental factors, their standardized ones by the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and their corresponding ones in Portuguese language. Most of the studies (58.5%) used the combination of subjective and objective methods in data collection. Questionnaires elaborated for the perception of the environment were used in 56.1% of the studies. Ten studies (24.4%) used the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale (NEWS) and its versions (NEWS-Y and NEWS-A), Neighborhood Physical Activity Questionnaire (NPAQ) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-E). The Geographic Information System (GIS) was used in 68% of the studies to objectively evaluate the characteristics of the environment and distance from home to school. Systematic observation was used in six studies and some studies used data from other environmental investigations and statistical censuses. Assessing the environment and its relation to physical activity has become a challenge for researchers. It is important to inquire those who experience the environment in their daily lives, however, it is also relevant to use objective measures to better understand the evidence on the influence of the environment on modes of active displacement.
