Higher education is one of the most important drivers for sustainability and competitiveness of countries worldwide. Students, being its most relevant target, should be understood as real consumers as they make choices and decisions based on a series of complex criteria. Recently, the scientific literature has been giving some attention to the issues related with brand attachment (relational affectivity) between consumers and brands, pointing out the need to study this subject under different contexts. The main goal of this research is to analyze, measure and understand the impact of brand attachment on consumer behavior, in the specific context of higher education in Portugal, focusing on the affective and emotional relationship established between students (consumers) and the higher education institutions that they attend. Thus, the conceptual framework proposed in this research seeks to highlight and analyse the possible relationships and associations between brand attachment, satisfaction, commitment, trust, expectations and loyalty. The methodology used has allowed the application of a questionnaire to the undergraduate students (finalists of bachelor’s degree), with a sample of 152 respondents. The results obtained from the empirical data show that brand attachment has, in fact, a preponderant role and impact in the relationship between students and higher education institutions. Students who have a stronger emotional and affective connection with the higher education institutions in which they are enrolled, that is, those who demonstrate a more intense level of brand attachment, tend to be also those who are more satisfied, committed and confident with their institutions. In addition, they become more loyal. This study represents an important contribution to the research on brand attachment in the fields of marketing and strategic management. It can also be viewed as an important contribution for marketers operating in the higher education sector in Portugal, considering that it provides relevant data to understand the motivations and interests of university students and, according to that, it allows to work on the best marketing strategies to promote a fruitful relationship between students and higher education institutions. Finally, limitations and suggestions for upcoming investigations are presented.
