The question of representation and how cultures produce artistic artifacts which mirror them as social bodies is one of the main issues of Cultural Studies. And from its origin, the question of representation was also crucial for theatre and drama, in theory and in practice. However, the competition of methods of representation appearing in the last century, like cinema, among others, and the social fragmentation that defines the contemporary life forced theatre to search for new paths that can insure its social and artistic relevance. This research aims to analyse several Portuguese-speaking works of contemporary drama in two of its essential elements: dramatic and stage action and the power for action embodied by the characters of the drama. Assuming that the main elements of theatre are the representation of action and the experience of human potencial, for which the theatrical elements are fundamental tools, we start with an historical overview of the different proposals suggested for action and power in theatre, followed by a discussion of the question of action and power in contemporary times, with the challenges and questions raised by societies defined by multiplicity and descentering. Based on these theoretical principles, I analyse three Portuguese theatrical works, by José Maria Vieira Mendes, Tiago Rodrigues and Visões Úteis, and three Brasilian theatrical pieces, by Roberto Alvim, Grace Passô and Marcos Barbosa, all of them created after 2000, with authors of the last quarter of the 20th century. My aim is to understand how these themes are presented by a Portuguese-speaking theatre culture. Based on this analysis, we aim to identify a series of elements and features common to the theatre practices, from the questioning of a cultural legacy, to the definition of an identity, to the submission of characters towards their cultural and social context, suggesting clues of cultural interpretation and specific representational and artistic traits of contemporary drama.
