As prisões políticas do Estado Novo no século XXI: uma perspectiva patrimonial

Abstract

A presente dissertação de mestrado pretende ir ao encontro a uma perspectiva patrimonial dos edifícios que outrora foram cárceres no contexto do Estado Novo, regime vigente em Portugal de 1926 a 1974. A contextualização deste regime revela-se relevante à compreensão do surgimento das prisões políticas na vasta extensão territorial do Portugal de então. Dotado de um carácter altamente repressivo, este regime culminou na prisão de milhares de portugueses, sujeitos às violências perpretadas pela polícia política. As memórias desses ex-presos políticos constituem uma peça fundamental na percepção e caracterização do regime vigente da altura e, por isso mesmo, a sua memória deve ser preservada. Esta dissertação pretende ir de encontro ao complemento entre a História, a Memória e o Património, já que estes se encontram intrinsecamente interligados. Actualmente, estes edifícios constituem símbolos da resistência e da liberdade e uma homenagem àqueles que lutaram em prol da Democracia e do direito às liberdades individuais e colectivas. Contudo, as actuais funções destes edifícios nem sempre vão ao encontro ao seu papel enquanto tal. Pretende-se, por isso, enfatizar alguns edifícios que se revestiram de cárceres políticos, para uma abordagem relativamente à sua funcionalidade nos dias actuais, e se a sua valorização enquanto património cultural se encontra assegurada.

The following master’s dissertation intend to approach a patrimonial perspective about the buildings that were prisons in Estado Novo, a regime that ruled Portugal from 1926 to 1974. This regime context is relevant to the understanding of the rise of the political prisons on the wide territorial extension of the Portugal of that time. By being a highly repressive regime, it resulted on several prisons of the portuguese people, exposed to the political police violences. The memories of those ex-political prisoners represent a major peace on the percepcion and caracterization of the regime and, that’s why, memory must be preserved. This dissertation intend to approach the complement between History, Memory and Patrimony, therefore they are intrinsically related each other. Nowadays, those buildings represent both symbols of resistance and freedom and an tribute to those who fight for the Democracy and the individual and colective rights. However, the actual functions of those buildings has not always meet their role as such. Thats why is intend to emphasize some buildings that were political prisons, to an approach to their functionality nowadays, and if their valorization as cultural patrimony is guaranteed.
