This thesis, entitled The Ethos Building in Albert Camus' The Stranger, falls within the area of linguistic discourse analysis, drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Amossy (1999, 2010), Maingueneau (1991, 1999) and Kerbrat Orecchioni (1980, 1992), particularly focusing on the concept of ethos on an interactive and enunciative approach. Our main goal is to examine the underlying linguistic mechanisms as well as the discursive processes that contribute to build Meursault’s different images. We decided to analyze the building phenomenon in Albert Camus’ novel The Stranger after realizing that the different images of Meursault, the main character, play an important role in the development of the narrative, meaning that Meursault’s micro images of self, along with his images built by other characters decisively contribute to a better and much more enlightened understanding of the novel. We took in account the fictional universe of The Stranger as a starting point to organize our analysis, therefore dividing it in two major parts according with the two central episodes of the novel: the funeral and the trial. Such structure aims to articulate two distinct points of view in what concerns the events after the death of Meursault’s mother, each one reflecting a different, yet complementary process of image building: ethos of self and ethos in the perspective of others. These perspectives are non convergent, therefore sustaining the construction of diverse partial images, such as the ethos of "stigmatized", "indifference", "insecurity", "monstrosity", "normality" and "vulnerability". Those partial images subsequently contribute to build a universal ethos of “misfit”. The novel, in the light of the absurdist literature philosophy, reveals a transformation of the “misfit” ethos: it no longer reflects the mismatch, the incompatibility between Meursault, the individual, and the society, rather between humankind and world we live in. Such subversion ultimately contributes to define the ethos of “absurd hero”.
