At the end of the nineteenth century, Guimarães began the gradual implementation of innovations in the various industrial branches that worked throughout the county, in which the prevalence was that of small industry, marked by small family manufactory that produced in small quantities and with manufacturing processes still very archaic. Through this dissertation we intend to demonstrate, besides the contribution of the economy of the county of Guimarães to classify the economy of the north of Portugal, also the importance and the efforts that institutions like the Martins Sarmento Society had, to generate in the county of Guimarães a improvement in the teaching and acquisition of new knowledge in the populations, marked by a great illiteracy, that was reflected automatically in their work activities and slow economic development. Through the analysis of data present in the local press of the time, we can see that in Guimarães there were great economic fluctuations over the years, with less favorable times that caused several fragile industrial branches to disappear or end up joining the big branches, such such as cutlery, leather and textiles. These fluctuations ended up being very present in the industrial surveys of 1881 and 1890, where because they were not very rigorous, they didn’t demonstrate the reality of the Vimaranian industry at the time. One of the major events held in favor of the Vimaranian economy and headed by the Martins Sarmento Society was undoubtedly the Guimarães Industrial Exhibition of 1884, which ended up marking the municipality of Guimarães at a national level and changing Portugal's view of Guimarães and its economy. This event will later open the way to the rooms of the Society Martins Sarmento, one of the first industrial museum founded in Portugal to appear, which presented the best that was done in the county, in various industries. Due to the difficulties of managing this Museum, the same and its products eventually disappeared, being most sold as in a fair. We can enumerate several reasons for the end and disappearance of the Museum through the pages of the period press and other publications, but the main causes were undoubtedly the purpose for which it was used, the different way that certainly the various directions used in their organization and even the lack of interest in its continuity. The industrial museum of Guimarães existed from 1900 to 1907, eventually disappearing from the proceedings of the Martins Sarmento Society from that date, having its estate disappeared and its furniture donated to the Santa Estefânia asylum.
