S. Mamede Deste: retrato de uma paróquia, das origens ao liberalismo

Abstract

O objetivo principal deste estudo consistiu em delinear em traços largos a biografia da freguesia de Este S. Mamede, desde as origens até finais do período moderno. Nas investigações a que procedemos, fomos tão longe quanto nos permitiram os vestígios ainda existentes. Existem evidências de que o espaço foi habitado desde os tempos pré-históricos, de que nos dão testemunho os castros existentes; a sua ocupação medieval é atestada pelos vários documentos contidos no Cartulário Bracarense (Liber Fidei). Nele encontramos documentos que referenciam a freguesia de Este S. Mamede, ainda que com toponímia diferente, nomeadamente; Villa Aliste, Villa Parietes, Villa Margotos, etc. Em contrapartida, é de 1028 o primeiro documento em que encontramos o topónimo correspondente àquele que viria a ser o topónimo atual. Cremos não haver dúvidas sobre o facto de ter sido o rio a definir o topónimo. Este nasce em plena freguesia, na serra do Carvalho, também outrora designada por monte Espinho. A fertilidade das terras deste território terá constituído o fator decisivo para a fixação das gentes, que se dedicaram quase em exclusivo à agricultura. Estas terras eram pertença na sua quase totalidade, pelo menos a partir da Baixa Idade Média, à Igreja, que as arrendava, geralmente na modalidade de prazo de três vidas, havendo também casos de subenfiteuse, num regime que durou muito para além do Liberalismo. No que toca à demografia, analisámos sobretudo os registos paroquiais, disponíveis a partir de 1559, elaborando gráficos da natalidade, nupcialidade e mortalidade, e analisámos também o movimento conjunto destas três variáveis. S. Mamede de Este anexou outra freguesia, S. Simão de Este, por alturas de 1439. Abordámos os oragos respetivos S. Mamede e S. Simão; bem como as confrarias religiosas, instituições importantes na vida da populações. Mereceu-nos atenção especial o património histórico da freguesia, quer eclesiástico quer civil. Fomos até onde nos foi possível, por falta de documentos e de datas, na sua apresentação. A Batalha do Carvalho D’Este ocupa lugar de destaque na memória coletiva da freguesia. Este confronto, ocorrido entre 18 e 20 de março de 1809, opôs as tropas francesas invasoras às forças portuguesas, formadas por militares e populares, causando inúmeras baixas.

The overall study objective, consists in describing the biography of Este S. Mamede parish, in Braga - Portugal, from its beginnings until the end of modern period. In our investigations we have gone as far as vestiges, that still remain, allowed us. There is evidence that these lands have been inhabited since prehistoric times, as witnessed by the existing castros; its medieval occupation is attested by various documents contained in the Cartulário Bracarense (Liber Fidei), where we find documents that refer to the parish, although with different toponymy as Villa Aliste, Villa Parietes, Villa Margotos, etc. Nevertheless, the first document in which we find the toponym corresponding to the one that would come to be the current parish name, is from 1028, that we believe was defined by river Este, born in Este S. Mamede, at Carvalho mountain, also formerly designated by Monte Espinho. The fertility of the lands in this territory, constituted the decisive factor for people's fixation, who dedicated themselves almost exclusively to agriculture. Since the late Middle Ages, these lands belonged almost entirely to the Church, which leased them, usually in the "three-life" modality. There were also cases of underlease, in a regime that lasted much beyond Liberalism. It terms of demography, we have analyzed parish registers, available since 1559, drawing birth, nuptiality and mortality charts, which we checked altogether. S. Mamede de Este annexed another parish, S. Simão de Este, by the year of 1439. We approached to the respective patrons S. Mamede and S. Simão; as well as religious confraternities, important institutions in these populations' lives. We paid special attention to the historical patrimony of the parish, ecclesiastical as well as civil and went as far as we could in their presentation, which couldn't go further due to some lack of documents and dates. A Batalha do Carvalho D’Este (Carvalho D'Este battle during French invasions) occupies a prominent place in parish's collective memory. This confrontation, which occurred between the 18th and the 20th March of 1809, opposed French troops invading the Portuguese, military and popular forces, causing countless casualties.
