Título: | Ler Gawain de Novo |
Autor(es): | Azevedo, Tânia Patrícia Leite Ribeiro dos Reis |
Orientador(es): | Louro, Maria Filomena |
Data: | 22-Fev-2019 |
A fonte essencial desta nova leitura será a obra
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, na edição de Tolkien e Gordon e as traduções de Brian Stone e
Tolkien.
A escolha desta
Taking into consideration the work about the Matter of Britain in Portugal, which includes prestigious authors such as Manuel Rodrigues Lapa, Ivo Castro and Teresa Amado, a new reading of its main texts was undertaken. This has to be done bearing in mind not only the continental European tradition, but also the one where the Matter of Britain has its thematic origins, i.e. the British one. The main source for this reading will be the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, in the edition by E. V. Gordon and J.R.R. Tolkien and two translations into Modern English: one by Brian Stone and another one by Tolkien. A comparative analysis will be made between our main sources and the critical apparatus about the medieval poem. We will endeavour to prove how the continental reading of the Matter of Britain was affected by the several translations that were made. To be able to do this we will use as an example the different ways in which one of the main characters – Gawain – has evolved in the continental literature and also in the insular tradition. To be able to accomplish such a task a journey through the theory of Dynamic Equivalence by Nida & Taber will be necessary and it will also be through our own translation of the medieval poem into Portuguese that we will be able to present not only a new interpretation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight but also bring again to the light of discussion the Matter of Britain in Portugal and the remainder of Europe. |
