Sobre a imagem da cidade de Braga: do mapa ao Google Earth, do bilhete-postal ao Instagram

Abstract

A presente dissertação procura analisar a imagem da Cidade de Braga, tendo em conta a sua morfologia rural e urbana, e ainda o seu património edificado. Com maior ou menor presença no nosso “arquivo” arquitetónico, o objetivo é analisar a arquitetura a partir de dois elementos, o do mapa e o do bilhete-postal, e fazê-lo perante uma contemporaneidade digital. De certo modo, a cartografia e a fotografia (os dois elementos que assistem o mapa e o bilhete-postal, respetivamente) parecem ser os elementos mais destacados quando pensamos na imagem de uma cidade, e que nos levam a ver e a imaginar uma possível realidade, seja ela presencial/tangível ou virtual/digital. Os mapas surgem como representações e gravuras de um território, em que através deles contemos uma imagem mais aproximada ou uma proposta de uma região ou localidade por eles planificada. Já o bilhete-postal ilustrado surge após os modelos de reprodução de imagem ganharem relevância e acessibilidade; emergindo como o reflexo da observação e interpretação dos espaços fotografados. Nesta investigação, analisamos a presença de elementos emblemáticos, arquitetónicos e patrimoniais da cidade de Braga nos mapas e nos bilhetes-postais, e verificamos como estes alteram e refletem a perceção da imagem de uma cidade, interferindo com o seu reconhecimento, desde o Mapa de Braunio (1594) até ao Mapa turístico de Braga (2018), bem como do património/imóvel classificado desde 1900 a 2018. Pretende-se, por fim, complementar a leitura do olhar atual sobre a imagem da cidade de Braga através destes dois elementos, entendendo as suas caraterísticas de representação assim como a evolução da imagem, tendo em conta a evolução dos tempos e o uso predominante das tecnologias digitais (como o Google Earth e o Instagram).

This dissertation seeks to analyze the image of the City of Braga, taking into account its rural and urban morphology, and also its built heritage. With more or less presence in our architectural "archive", the objective is to analyze the architecture from two elements, the map and the postcard ticket, and do so in a digital contemporaneity. In a way, cartography and photography (the two elements that assist the map and the postcard, respectively) seem to be the most prominent elements when we think about the image of a city, and that lead us to see and imagine a possible reality, whether it is presence / tangible or virtual / digital. The maps appear as representations and engravings of a territory, through them we contain a closer image or a proposal of a region or locality planned by them. On the order hand, the illustrated postcard appears after the models of image reproduction gain relevance and accessibility; emerging as the reflection of the observation and interpretation of the photographed spaces. In this research, we analyze the presence of emblematic, architectural and heritage elements of the city of Braga in maps and postcards, and we verify how these alter and reflect the perception of the image of a city, interfering with its recognition, from the Map of Braunio (1594) to the Tourist Map of Braga (2018), as well as the heritage / property classified from 1900 to 2018. Finally, it is intended to complement the reading of the current view on the image of the city of Braga through these two elements, understanding its representation characteristics as well as the evolution of the image, taking into account the evolution of time and the predominant use of digital technologies (such as Google Earth and Instagram).
