Trabalho e família: esferas necessariamente divergentes ou potencialmente convergentes?

Abstract

Gerir os diversos papéis de vida é algo progressivamente complexo e urgente. Numa sociedade em mudança, em que a flexibilidade, a instabilidade e a diversidade constituem palavras de ordem, conhecer a forma como as pessoas lidam com as exigências dos vários papéis, nomeadamente, o trabalho e a família, tem implicações importantes para a intervenção psicossocial. Este artigo revê e discute algumas das principais mudanças socio-económicas ocorridas recentemente no mundo do trabalho e da família e o seu impacto na forma de pensar e gerir a carreira ao longo da adolescência e vida adulta. Apresentam-se, ainda, as conclusões dos estudos que se têm dedicado à compreensão do conflito entre os papéis do trabalho e da família, e as sugestões de resolução daquele conflito, numa perspectiva de convergência.

Managing all life roles is a task increasingly complex and urgent. In a changing society, characterized by flexibility, instability and diversity, to understand how people deal with demands of the various life roles, in particular, work and familial roles has important implications for psychosocial intervention. This paper reviews and discusses some of the major social and economic changes that occurred more recently in the world of work and family, and their impact on the way of thinking and managing the career along the adolescence and adulthood. We will also present the conclusions of a line of research that has been dedicated to the understanding of the conflict between work and family life roles, and the suggestions for the resolution of that conflict, based on the perspective of convergence.
