Nota introdutória: ressignificações da festa e identidades comunitárias

[Excerto] “Ela é nossa!” – dizem os bugios aos saltos na festa de São João de Sobrado. Não é certo a que se referem, se à imagem de São João que disputam com os mourisqueiros, se à própria festa. Seja como for, podemos dizer que a festa conhece no presente um momento de afirmação, que é acompanhado por uma desafiante ressignificação. Tão importante quanto a festa, na sua dimensão simbólica e ritual, são os grupos que a fazem. Assim, estudar as festas na contemporaneidade exige um mergulho nas comunidades que festejam, para quem a “sua” festa é tradição, mas também afirmação identitária e celebração comunitária, a que são dedicados consideráveis recursos (materiais, de tempo e de energia). [Excerpt] “It’s ours!” cry the Bugios, or Christians, at the São João Festival in Sobrado, leaping joyously. It is unclear what they are referring to – the image of Saint John, for which they are fighting the Mourisqueiros (Moors), or the festival itself. Whichever it may be, we can say with certainty that the festival is experiencing a period of affirmation, bringing with it the challenge of redefinition. Just as important as the festival itself, its symbolism and ritual, are the groups that take part. Therefore, the study of festivals today requires us to immerse ourselves in the communities that observe them, for whom “their” festival is not merely a tradition, but a statement of identity and a community celebration, to which considerable resources (materials, time and money) are devoted.
